Instead of moving forward, Liverpool take steps back. Further from contention for a European spot in the Premier League, and not really in a good position to turn their Europa League knockout tie on its head, as Brendan Rodgers learnt once more that playing with Steven Gerrard and Joe Allen together isn’t good for a team that simply doesn’t know how to play defensively.

By trying to incorporate Jonjo Shelvey into the team after a while, Brendan Rodgers made it impossible for quite a few players to bring their best to the match. Beyond Steven Gerrard missing the penalty kick and Luis Suarez having one of those matches when he spends most of it arguing with the referee, the Liverpool manager didn’t give his players the best chance to win.

It may be not too far away from us when Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from the English Premier League as well, but it doesn’t look like Liverpool fans have anything to worry about for the time being, with Gerrard not missing a single minute of football so far this season.

Liverpool Couldn’t Score Against a Bought Vukasin Poleksic
There is no confirmation, but it seems that the Champions League match on English soil under the suspicion of match fixing is Liverpool vs Debrecen from the 2009-2010 group stage, a match which the Reds won 1-0, but allegedly Debrecen goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic was paid to concede at least three goals in the match.

Liverpool FC – Steven Gerrard Still Great, Pepe Reina Far From It
Still no win against a team in the top 10 of the Premier League, but another match to show that Liverpool are pretty much going in the right direction. The right kind of approach in a match against a stronger team, led by Steven Gerrard in the middle and Luis Suarez up front, while the defense, and especially Pepe Reina, couldn’t handle the opportunity given to them.

One team in the title race, the other not quite sure where it’s heading. Manchester City are losing ground in the race for the Premier League championship, and can’t afford to lose more points. Liverpool might be headed to Europe, but it’s not sure how, and hard to tell if they’re good enough to make it.

English Premier League 2013 January Transfer Window Signings
Not the busiest of transfer windows, but still with a few notable moves, as every January brings us – Liverpool purchasing Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea and Philippe Coutinho from Inter; Newcastle raiding the French league, Chelsea buying Demba Ba; Arsenal landing Nacho Montreal from Malaga and QPR, also very busy, signing Christopher Samba.
