Tony La Russa, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals for the last 16 seasons, winning two World Series this decade, adding to the one he won with the Oakland Athletics in 1989, decided to retire from managing.

In a post season filled with Starters and Aces doing a horrible job, Chris Carpenter showed another example of his playoff prowess, throwing six strong innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the World Series over the Texas Rangers.
