And so Kyrie Irving demanded a trade, which resulted in a lot of memes making fun of the Cleveland Cavaliers, especially LeBron James, and drawing out those old comparisons to Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
The angle of the story right now is that Irving doesn’t want to play next to James anymore. He wants to be the best player on his team, and although James has just one more season left on his current deal, Irving wants out now. He’s probably forgetting how bad the Cavaliers are when he’s playing without LeBron or before James joined the team, but some NBA players have very short memories.
Meanwhile, James is taking a lot of flack for “making” Irving demand a trade. Maybe Irving decided to strike first, sensing that James was leaving after the 2017-2018 NBA season. Maybe yes, maybe no, but James was reportedly stunned by the news of Irving wanting to leave.
Irving, according to rumors, has 4 teams he’s thinking about: The Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks. It sounds like the Cavaliers are trying to work a 3-team trade with the Knicks and Suns to get something out of this Irving situation before they get seriously low-balled. The end of this situation for the team will end in tears anyway; it’s better for them to try and make the most of it.
