Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao looked to be heading in different directions. Mayweather to prison, Pacquiao to fight someone Bob Arum finds comfortable to close a deal with. It seemed the two were deemed to meet later, or not at all. Despite all that, Mayweather, at least according to social media, wants the big fight to happen this May.
Well, Mayweather might have been high on his winning $400k by betting on Alabama in the BCS championship game. He tweeted the betting slip, and then went on to reveal his desire for a fight against the WBO Welterweight champion - Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see. My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk.
Mayweather got a lucky break from the judge, a one he shouldn’t have. The incredible thing about Floyd is he shows no remorse or some shard of trying to be humble despite being a convicted women beater. Being a great fighter has nothing to do with his personality, and he is a great fighter, maybe the best in the world.
While it seems Mayweather rules his own destiny, and at least talks the talk of wanting the mega fight to happen, Manny Pacquiao is in a different situation. He’s also talking about wanting to fight Mayweather, wanting to fight whoever the fans want him to. He’s also under the guidance of Bob Arum, who has a different timetable and opponents set in mind for his golden eggs laying goose.
I’ve said this over and over before and I’m saying this again, I want Floyd Mayweather Jnr to be my next opponent and I haven’t changed my choice despite recent developments. I am meeting with my promoter, Bob Arum, and I will insist that the fight with Mayweather be given the preference. Whoever the fans want me to fight, I will face him atop the ring. However, I don’t choose the fight. It is my promoter who does because it’s his job. My job is to fight, everybody must realise that.
Bob Arum himself seems to be doing everything the opposite. He’s thinking of four different opponents, none of them named Floyd Mayweather – Juan Manuel Marquez (rematch), Miguel Cotto (rematch), Lamont Peterson and Timothy Bradley. While Mayweather was still going to jail, Arum was seriously considering the May date, especially Marquez for May 5. Now? It’s all about June for Arum.
We’re fighting in June, one of the four guys. My mission is to go over to the Philippines and talk about these four guys. If Manny feels he wants to go in May, he will tell me. I want to make sure Manny’s cuts are healed. We won’t fall under this kind of pressure. June is much more likely for Manny’s fight, not May. I don’t even know if Mayweather will be licensed before he serves his time.
With every action and word, Arum just seems to be playing into De La Hoya’s and others’ accusations. Delaying, evading, doing everything possible not to strike a deal with Golden Boy, not to put Pacquiao in the same ring as Floyd Mayweather Jr.
On lower accords, behind the scenes, a man close to Manny Pacquiao, an adviser if you will, Michael Koncz, is saying Pacquiao has agreed to fight Mayweather but under two conditions – Changing the date of the fight to the end of May, which will be much closer to Mayweather’s jail time date. One more? Fighting in a bigger venue than the MGM Grand, something more like an open air stadium with 45-50 thousand seats, which might bring more than $20 million.
Another trick to delay the fight or stop it from happening? Honestly, at this point, I don’t even know what to think anymore. Lets just hope things roll the right way and the wrong men and ambitions don’t get in the way.
