Going by the first half, it’s surprising United made it look so easy in the end. But that’s United, with Ferguson on the touchline or not. After Pompy being the better side in the first half, United took control in the second half, with Wayne Rooney scoring two and completing a hat-trick and Ryan Giggs sealed things off right before the end. Avram Grant made his return to the premiership and like his debut, against Manchester United two years ago, he lost. This time he has a lot more work and less material, or less quality to work with. Pompy stay dead last while West Ham improved their situation with an impressive 5-3 win over Burnley and Wigan beat Sunderland. United? They did what they needed, putting the pressure back on Chelsea, who are top with 2 points above United and a very difficult away derby match against Arsenal tomorrow.

Wayne Rooney (penalty), 25th minute

Kevin-Prince Boateng (penalty), 32nd minute

Wayne Rooney, 48th minute

Wayne Rooney, 54th minute

Ryan Giggs, 87th minute

well, even the new coach didn’t help Portsmouth against the Red Devils.
say Peter, is there any team in the history of the Champions League who didn’t score any goal and hasn’t won even a single point during the group stage?
