In a day dedicated to cup finals, all but one of the four big finals went to extra time. Manchester United beat Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup in 120 minutes, Juventus needed extra time to win against AC Milan, Bayern Munich triumphed in a penalty shootout over Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain were the only ones who completed the job within 90 minutes, beating Marseille.
Manchester United win the FA Cup for the 12th time, sharing the record, and for the first time since 2004. They beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the final that went to extra time. Jason Puncheon gave Palace the 1-0 lead in the 78th minute after a dull match, but Juan Mata equalized only three minutes later, sending the match into 30 more minutes. Despite being a man short following the sending off of Chris Smalling in the 105th minute, United grabbed the winner through Jesse Lingard, volleying in a rebound in the 110th minute to write his name in club and competition history.
Juventus win the Coppa Italia for the 11th time and second in a row, beating Milan 1-0 in the final thanks to Alvaro Morata scoring in extra time. This is Juve’s second consecutive double. as they also win the Series A for a fifth consecutive time, cementing further their dominance in Italian football.
The final match for Pep Guardiola as the manager of Bayern Munich lands him his second double with the club, as they beat Dortmund in penalty kicks following a 0-0 draw. This is the 18th time Bayern Munich have won the German Cup and their first since 2014. It’s the 11th time Bayern have completed the double (winning both the league and cup). Dortmund missed two of their penalties, Bayern missed one. Douglas Costa scored the clinching kick.
Coupe de France
PSG win the trophy for a 10th time and second in a row, complementing their fourth consecutive league title in France. Blaise Matuidi put them in front after only three minutes, but Florian Thauvin equalized for Marseille in the 12th minute. A Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty kick in the 47th minute opened the second half barrage, carrying on with goals from Cavani and Ibrahimovic again, getting the perfect send off from the club. Michy Batshuayi scored late for Marseille, making it a 4-2 win for Paris.
