If it wasn’t for Zach Randolph switching gears after the first two games in the series, maybe Blake Griffin wouldn’t be injured right now. But the Memphis Grizzlies forward wasn’t about to find himself out of the playoffs in the first round for a second year in a row, simply steamrolling and bulldozing the competition to make it three wins in a row as his team has taken over the series. It’s hard to describe the feeling of the last couple of years to those not following the Los Angeles Clippers up closely for most of their life, not really used to seeing stars playing for the team and actually succeed with it in a way that makes losing in the first round of the playoffs sound like a disappointment. Chris Paul, above everyone else, has been in charge of creating that change. More
Despite the franchise record for wins and consecutive victories, not to mention a division title and finishing ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers, the only thing that will be satisfying for the Los Angeles Clippers after they play their final game of the 2012-2013 NBA season will be if it’s in the Western Conference semifinal, and it’ll mean Chris Paul will stay for a very long time. We didn’t see anything special from Chris Paul or Blake Griffin, yet the Los Angeles Clippers looked quite pleased walking off the court in a game that proved once again that this team has the right mix of players, stars and bench guys to make this season the greatest in the history of the franchise, even if it means that winning basketball isn’t going to be as flashy as we’ve gotten used to seeing from them on certain nights. As the season winds down and the Los Angeles Clippers are trying to somehow improve their standing in the Western conference, it’s evident that a shift has been made in what matters and needs to happen in order for them to win – while most of the season it was about the bench unit being the difference, later on and entering the playoffs, it’s all about Chris Paul and Blake Griffin playing their best basketball all game long. It seems that with each win, the Los Angeles Clippers set another record or milestone in the underachieving franchise’s history, having to thank the ping pong ball that brought Blake Griffin to the team, followed by the trade that allowed the even more important Chris Paul to arrive, making them feel, for the first time ever, that anything less than a conference semifinal in the NBA playoffs will be a huge disappointment. Blake Griffin made the finish even more impressive than most of the game has been with his dunking and a huge three pointer, but it was Chris Paul, all throughout this game and all throughout the season that kept the Los Angeles Clippers ahead of their city and division rivals, sweeping the series with the Lakers for the first time in history while earning their first ever Pacific division title. When you give someone as athletic and big like DeAndre Jordan so many open looks next to the rim, there’s no reason he shouldn’t finish with a double double, despite his limited offensive and general basketball abilities, helping the Los Angeles Clippers, setting a new franchise record for wins in a regular season, reaching that magical 50 number for the first time ever. More
With players like Chris Paul and Blake Griffin in the lineup, it was quite clear the Los Angeles Clippers weren’t going to fail this season because of their offense. On the other hand, the x-factor which was going to determine how far they’ll make it into the postseason was their ability to remain consistent on defense, something that hasn’t really happened over the last couple of months. More
Despite all of their improvements and all of their depth, the Los Angeles Clippers remain a team that is almost completely reliant on Chris Paul to come up with the scoring in the final minutes while everyone else simply takes a step backs and hopes everything turns out well. In the regular season it’s mostly been working fine for them, but come the playoffs, it won’t be enough to get the Clippers further than ever before. More
