Number 10 – Kevin-Prince Boateng, June 26, Ghana vs United States, Round of 16

Boateng, like Ghana, had an impressive World Cup, filling in for the injured Michael Essien. He opened the scoring in the round of 16 match against the USA with this powerful drive through the middle and a great finish with his left foot. Ghana beat the USA 2-1 after extra time.

Number 9 – David Villa, June 21, Spain vs Honduras, Group Stage

David Villa scored both goals in Spain’s 2-0 win over Honduras, putting them back on the track which eventually led them to World Cup glory. He brilliantly got between two defenders and was able to pull off the shot while falling down, as another two were closing in on him.

Number 8 – Maicon, June 15, Brazil vs North Korea, Group Stage

Like most of the Brazilian players, Maicon disappointed with his performances in the World Cup, but did manage to put his print on the event with a rare goal, mistake or not, from an impossible angle.

Number 7 – Mesut Ozil, June 23, Germany vs Ghana, Group Stage

Germany were hands down the most impressive side in this World Cup, but still needed a win over Ghana to secure their place among the last 16. Ozil had his moments during the tournament, and this goal against Ghana, sealing qualification for the Germans, was probably his best.

Number 6 – Fabio Quagliarella, June 24, Italy vs Slovakia, Group Stage

This was Italy’s last goal of the World Cup, a beautiful chip by a sub that probably should have been used more to avoid the embarrassing finish to their campaign, ending with elimination after only three matches, two points and no wins.

Number 5 – Arne Friedrich, July 3, Germany vs Argentina, Quarter Final

Friedrich was the one who scored the goal, but all credit goes to Bastian Schweinsteiger, one of the better players we saw this past month, cutting through the helpless Argentina defense, setting up an easy goal for the German defender, making it 3-0. Klose made it 4 later on.

Number 4 – Diego Forlan, July 6, Uruguay vs Netherlands, Semi Final

Not quite as magical as the Dutch goal a few minutes earlier, but a wonderful goal nonetheless. I love this goal because Forlan scored it with his weaker left foot, striking it with awesome power. It wasn’t enough for Uruguay to make it to the Final, eventually losing 3-2. Forlan won the World Cup’s best player award.

Number 3 – Luis Suarez, June 26, Uruguay vs South Korea, Round of 16

Suarez scored twice in Uruguay’s round of 16 win of South Korea, with his second goal, the winning goal, scored under the heavy rain that poured on Port Elizabeth, with a beautiful curve. Suarez’ heroism/villainy helped Uruguay make the semi final, but he didn’t get to play in the 3-2 loss against the Netherlands.

Number 2 – Carlos Tevez, June 27, Argentina vs Mexico, Round of 16

Carlos Tevez’ first goal in this match should have been disallowed due to offside. His second one however was probably the most powerful shot in the entire World Cup, thundering the ball into the Mexican net, making it 3-0 (Hernandez reduced it to 3-1 later) as Argentina dispatched of Mexico in the round of 16 for the second consecutive time.

Number 1 – Giovanni van Bronckhorst, July 6, Netherlands vs Uruguay, Semi Final

One of the greatest goals in World Cup history, no doubt. I needed to watch the replay time and time again, with the goal looking more and more amazing every time. The ball glided through the air, looking harmless at the first glance, somehow ending up in the net. Van Bronckhorst retired after the loss in the final to Spain after 106 caps and six goals for the national team, with the last one about to replayed time and time again every time a World Cup comes knockin’.

A fantastic goal by Brazilian wing back Douglas Maicon opened the scoring in Inter’s 2-0 win over Juventus, which put them back (temporarily at least) at the top of the Serie A, aiming at a fifth consecutive championship in Italy and getting ready for their Champions league clash with Barcelona on Tuesday. Either way, Maicon’s juggling act provided one of the best scoring displays of the season in Europe.

First of all, the sometimes brilliant, sometimes annoying and hated Dutch winger that is Arjen Robben, the super-striked Bayern Munich into the quarter finals with his amazing shot with his left from way out, giving Bayern the second away goal it needed, making Fiorentina very sad winners with a 3-2 victory at home, not enough to improve their rather disappointing season.

Miles away in jolly London, Arsenal thrashed Porto 5-0, with Samir Nasri scoring a splendid third, toying with Porto’s defense with a breathtaking dribble and cold as ice finishing.

Kevin Phillips, Birmingham City

The veteran striker scored two goals, leading Birmingham City back from a 1-0 deficit against Wolves, with his winning goal being a fantastic stop-on-the-chest-and-volley shot in the 85th minute.

Vicente Moreno, Xerez

Fantastic first touch shot from Moreno, equalizing the game at Bilbao which ended in a 3-2 for the home side.

Matthieu Valbuena, Marseille

As Marseille thrashed Valenciennes 5-1, Valbuena scored the best goal of the match with this nice shot from 18 meters out.

Came across this video just now, after not seeing this goal in years – Ronnie Radford scores for Hereford United (a non-league club) in their classic upset win, maybe the biggest FA Cup shock of all time, 2-1 over Newcastle (top-flight club) back in 1972. The goal, despite the crowd invasion to the pitch, wasn’t the winning goal but only the equalizer, as Ricky George was the one to score the winner in extra time.

Well, with Leeds making the headlines for good reasons lately,( yeah, that win over United in the FA Cup, if you’ve heard of it) my train of thought somehow brought me to Tony Yeboah who had a couple of good seasons with Leeds in the mid-90’s and enjoyed quite successful spells in the German Bundesliga. Getting to the point, when you think of the Ghanaian striker, two brilliant goals come to mind, probably two of the best ever in the Premiership’s history – one against Wimbledon and the other against Liverpool. So here, for those of you who’ve never seen them or just like to fondly remember the 90’s – enjoy.

Last night at the FIFA awards, besides selecting the best player of the year (Messi) and 2009’s best XI, they also chose the best goal of the year, and here are the top 5, for your enjoyment -

Number 5 – Fernando Torres, Liverpool

The fantastic Spanish striker scored a beautiful goal against Blackburn, as the reds beat them 4-0 in a game that also had a fantastic Daniel Agger goal and Blackburn’s Samba (Central Defender on most days) play as striker.

Number 4 – Eliran Atar, Beni Yehoda

Yes, the Israeli league does produce fantasy goals from time to time, and young Atar’s scissor kick goal was pure class.

The Brazilian has had a tough time this year, along with his teammates, but 2008-2009 was like a dream for him, as he topped the Bundesliga in scoring, and haunted Bayern’s defenders in their sleep with this amazing slalom and cheeky finish.

Number 2 – Andres Iniesta, Barcelona

One of the more controversial games in recent years, but still, no doubt about Iniesta’s goal being special, although a bit too high on this list in my opinion. Maybe it’s the importance, as his injury time goal lifted Barcelona into the Champions League Final.

Number 1 – Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid (The goal was scored when he was still with Manchester United)

Talk about your crowd silencer. That goal came from nowhere, and shows Ronaldo’s ability to score from anywhere at anytime. I liked other goals better than this one but this long range strike in the Champions League quarter final is truly a special one.

After yesterdays five games, highlights by Arsenal beating Celtic in Glasgow and Sporting Lisbon drawing 2-2 with Fiorentina, here’s tonight’s action and goals – Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) hosting Debrecen (Hungary), Lyon hosting Anderlecht, Panathinaikos hosting Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) hosting Maccabi Haifa (Israel) and Ventspils (Latvia) hosting FC Zurich (Switzerland) -

Lyon crushed Anderlecht 5-1, leading 4-0 by the end of the first half. Gomis with 2, Lisandro Lopez, Michel Bastos and Pjanic scored for the French, Matias Suarez scored the only goal for the Belgians.

Atletico Madrid made a huge step towards the Champions League group stage by grabbing a fantastic away win in Greece, beating PAO 3-2. Maxi Rodriguez, Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero scored for the Spaniards, Salpingidis and former Liverpool player Sebastian Leto scored for PAO.

Another away win – Maccabi Haifa, who were the first Israeli team to reach the Champions League group stage back in the 2002-2003 season, beating Manchester United 3-0 in that season, came back from Austria with a 2-1 away win in Salzburg. Gadir scored for the visitors first before ex-Bayern Munich player Zickler scored the equalizer. Shlomi Arbeitman scored the winner for Haifa.

Debrecen also came up with an away win in Bulgaria, 2-1 over Levski Sofia. Bodnar and Czvithovics scored for the winners. Cedric Bardon, who played in Israel and in the Champions League last season with Anathorsis of Cyprus, scored for Levski.

And our final game – another away win. Zurich came up with an easy 3-0 win in Latvia over Ventspils – the team everyone in the champions draw wanted to get. Former PSV Wonderkid Johan Vonlanthen, Silvan Aegerter and Dusan Djuric scored for Zurich.

After Chelsea beating Sunderland 3-1 and Wolves surprising Wigan 1-0 yesterday, we take a look at all the goals and action from today in the English Premiership – Burnley hosting Manchester United, Liverpool looking to rebound from their loss to Tottenham at home against Stoke, Tottenham going to Hull City and Birmingham hosting Portsmouth.

We’ll start with Burnley’s shocking win over Manchester United with this brilliant Robbie Blake goal – A fantastic volley into United’s net, Burnley win 1-0

Liverpool got their first win of the season, crushing Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield, with Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, David N’gog and one brilliant Glen Johnson goal doing the damage.

Tottenham crushed Hull City at Hull 5-1, and currently lead the table in the Premiership. Jermaine Defoe scored a hat trick, with Robbie Keane and Wilson Palacios also adding a couple. Stephen Hunt netted his second goal of the season for Hull.

Finally, Birmingham got their first win in their return to the premiership, a 1-0 home win over Portsmouth, with James McFadden scoring a 90th minute Penalty.
