Everything that was predicted in this group got turned up side down. Russia, the best team through the first two matches lost to Greece 0-1, and while safe as long as there was a draw between Poland and the Czech Republic, Petr Jiracek sent the Czechs into the next stage along with Greece as the first quarter-finalists in Euro 2012. The final day for Group A brings us two matches at the same time, with Greece hoping to surprise Russia and by that secure a place in the quarterfinals while the co-hosts Poland have to win against the Czech Republic in order to keep their nation’s interest in the tournament alive. More
Poland and Russia, as expected, gave us the more entertaining match in a not stop affair, clouded by the pre-match violence that ended in yet another 1-1 draw for the hosts, leaving Group A wide open. Earlier on day 5 of Euro 2012, the Czech Republic rebounded from their opening loss with a quick blitz to nearly put Greece out of the tournament with a 2-1 win. More
Back to Group A as Euro 2012 begins its second round of matches, as Russia, the team that produced the best performance out of all 16 teams, try and bring their counter attacking against the pumped up home side, Poland. Greece will try and take advantage of the low morale at the Czech Republic camp with their usual, not so pleasing to watch style. More
We couldn’t have asked for a better day to kick of Euro 2012. Poland and Greece provided us with two goals and two red cards, while Russia showed from the first moment they are the class of this group with an impressive 4-1 thrashing of the Czech Republic after a wonderful performance from Andrei Arshavin and Alan Dzagoev. Euro 2012 finally kicks off in Warsaw’s National Stadium as Poland play Greece, opening the tournament and the Group A competition, and later we’ll get the chance to probably see a better match, with Russia and the Czech Republic going at each other in Wroclaw at the Miejski Stadium. More
Group A, consisting of Poland, Czech Republic, Greece and Russia is probably the hardest to predict in the Euro 2012 group stage. Poland relying on their ‘German’ players with a coach known to experiment and surprise; Greece who will probably bore and depress everyone again; the Czech Republic who seem to be impressing no one heading into the tournament; Russia, with an attacking style but with plenty of egos Dick Advocaat needs to handle. This is what All Blacks have been waiting for – a good hard thumping of small (Rugby) nation. Japan haven’t won a World Cup match since 1991 and were out of this game three minutes in, after Conrad Smith opened the scoring. It ended with a 83-7 win, with Richard Kahui and Sonny Bill Williams, to the pleasure of the ladies, both scoring two tries. More
We have our first four – Uruguay beat Mexico and will face South Korea (drew 2-2 with Nigeria) while the perfect Argentina (2-0 vs Greece) will meet the Mexicans in the last 16.
