    Andy Roddick did beat Roger Federer earlier this month in the Madison Square Garden exhibition, but that wasn’t suppose to reflect on big tournaments, on actually important ATP Tour Masters events. Well, it happened. For only the third time in his 24 matches with Roger, Roddick came out on top, winning 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne.

    Roger Federer has been hearing the talks, the criticism, the calls for retirement. They’ve been going on for three years now, more or less. The voices grow stronger after a disappointing finish to a Grand Slam tournament, like in 2010, when he couldn’t make it past the quarter finals at the Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Those voices dissappear when he wins the Indian Wells, his third tournament in 2012.

Roddick has only beaten him twice in 23 matches. Last night, at the Madison Square Garden, he got a rare win, beating Federer 7-5, 7-6 (7) but alas, it was only an Exhibition match.

    Roger Federer won his first ATP tournament of 2012 and his first since the London ATP World Tour Finals by beating Juan Martin Del Porto 6-4, 6-1 at the Rotterdam Open (ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament), making it his 71st single’s title and a nice way to re-start the season after his disappointing Davis cup performance against the United States.

    Roger Federer, at 30 years of age, 16 grand slam titles and 70 singles titles, still has the hunger to pursue more titles, more money, and even regaining the ATP rankings number one spot which he held on to so easily and successfully during years past. The problem is the consistency and ability, compared to someone like Novak Djokovic, isn’t there anymore.
