At this point of the NFL free agency, just before all focus shifts to the draft, it’s about finding specialists. The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints want to add a running back who can catch the ball, which is just what Travaris Cadet specializes in.

The 28-year old spent last season with the Saints, returning to them after bouncing around quite a bit in 2015. He finished with 40 receptions for 281 yards and 4 touchdowns, while getting a few touches when carrying the ball, but that came down to 4 carries and 19 yards. The Saints’ main interest in him is another passing option for Drew Brees, as someone who can get some yards after the catch.

While the Saints have the familiarity advantage in this case, the Jets are offering more money. It’s not going to be too much, but Cadet made $760,000 last season in New Orleans, so perhaps even the slightest difference will make him lean towards a certain direction. The Jets also have John Morton as their new offensive coordinator. Morton worked in New Orleans as the wide receivers coach in 2015 and 2016, and has a very good relationship with Cadet.

Overall, the former Appalachian State player has been in the NFL for five years, playing in 63 games including a career high 15 last season. He has 102 receptions for 840 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has yet to score a single rushing touchdown in his career.

In other free agent news, linebacker Zach Brown, last playing with the Buffalo Bills, is visiting the Oakland Raiders. Interest in him has been slim so far, with the Raiders being his first (and only???) stop so far. The Bills return isn’t going to happen, and the Miami Dolphins, showing interest in Brown up to last week, have signed Lawrence Timmons to a two-year deal, narrowing the market down for Brown even further. 

Guard Tim Lelito, who has been rather solid in four years for the New Orleans Saints, is visiting the Detroit Lions and could end up signing there. He grew up not too far from the city, which should make it a rather easy choice for him if the money’s right.

Last but not least is fullback Zach Line, who is visiting with the New York Jets. He has played for the Minnesota Vikings the last four years and is a workhorse player. He’s not going to do much with the ball (20 touches through his career) but he’s a solid blocker in both run and pass calls.
