In a thrilling kick off to the 2017-2018 Premier League season, Arsenal managed a late comeback against Leicester, Liverpool did the same against Watford only to concede in injury time and drop two points, champions Chelsea were stunned with 9 men at Stamford Bridge against Burnley while Wayne Wayne Rooney had a perfect return to Goodison Park, scoring his first goal for Everton in 14 years.
Arsenal 4 Leicester City 3: An incredible opening match to the season, as Arsenal took a lightning quick lead through Alexandre Lacazette on his debut, but fell behind twice after being unable to cope with Jamie Vardy. In the end, goals from subs Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud left the points at the Emirates.
Watford 3 Liverpool 3: The hectic pace and poor defending from the first night of the new season carried on in another part of London, as Watford led twice, Liverpool eventually took the lead due to combinations between Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, but in the end, defensive substitutions by Jurgen Klopp and another set piece mistake allowed Miguel Britos to equalize in injury time.
Chelsea 2 Burnley 3: The madness continues in London as the champions took on Burnley with a bit too much motivation. Gary Cahill got sent off; so did Cesc Fabregas later on. Burnley led by 3 goals, including a Sam Vokes double, before Alvaro Morata (debut goal) and David Luiz put the home side back in the match.
Crystal Palace 0 Huddersfield 3: Newcomers to the Premier League? So What? Another London match, another stunning result. Palace looked completely out of sorts, while the Terriers had a perfect Premier League debut, including a brace for Steve Mounie.
Everton 1 Stoke 0: Not a great match for Everton, but Wayne Rooney returning to Goodison Park wearing blue was perhaps the most sentimental of moments in the league’s opening day. It was fitting that he also got a goal for the first time since being a teenager for the Toffees.
Southampton 0 Swansea 0: Besides people with players from these team’s defense on their fantasy team, no one was too happy about what transpired in a disappointing match, the first goalless draw of the season.
West Brom 1 Bournemouth 0: Another dull affair, decided by Ahmed Hegazi with a header in the 31st minute.
Brighton 0 Manchester City 2: Not the smoothest of first halfs for Man City against the newcomers, but goals from Sergio Aguero and Lewis Dunk made the difference.
