The memes regarding the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool mostly focused on two players, Sergio Ramos and Loris Karius.

Ramos for being the ultimate bad guy – doing the evil deed needed to be done for victory not for the first time, and looking 0 percent apologetic about it. Ramos injured Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s best player, in the 25 minute by pulling him down to the ground while handing on to his shoulder. Intentional? Maybe. Most likely. It killed a promising Liverpool momentum, and left the reds, besides Sadio Mane, mostly clueless on attack.

And Karius? He has to be the tragic figure of the evening, and one of the most tragic in the history of the competition. Allowing an opening goal by throwing the ball on Karim Benzema instead of waiting for the Frenchman to clear the box. And then conceding from Gareth Bale’s 30-meter shot, going straight to his hands, only the German goalie parried it into his own net.

A weird Champions League final. One that felt like it should have been different. Closer, better, at least for one of the sides. Real Madrid’s dynasty added another notch to its belt, one that weirdly feels they don’t deserve.
