The Editor told us – go out and help someone today! So Greg decided to help Jerry Colangelo pick the 12 men for USA Basketball heading into the London Olympics. I chose to help Alex Ferguson, whoĀ admittedĀ he faces a selectionĀ headache up front, with six strikers on his roster.
Who are we talking about? Lets start with the one on fire – Javier Hernandez. Chicharito scored 20 goals for United, playing better and better as the season went along. His debut season in Europe. And he cost just 8 million pounds. He was brilliant in the low quality Gold Cup just last month, scoring 7 goals in the tournament that Mexico won. This year he’ll be heading into the season as the primo man up front, yes, a more trustworthy scoring option than Wayne Rooney.
Wayne Rooney – His first half of 2010-2011 couldn’t have been any worse. It won’t happen again. Maybe even the plugs will help. I’m not sure that playing Wayne Rooney up front is the best option. He moved a little lower last year and played better behind the strikers and sometimes even in the middle of the park. I’m not saying he’s the English answer to Xavi and Iniesta, but Rooney is the most versatile player Ferguson has in his squad. Playing as a classic no. 10 might be the better option.

Dimitar Berbatov – The Bulgarian lazy man netted in 21 goals last season, 20 in the Premier League. Yet, he’s just not good enough for a team with the aspirations of continental dominance such as United. Berbatov was a very expensive buy, hence the reluctance to let him go for the dirt price he’s probably worth right now. Still, I wouldn’t want him starting for my team if I was a United fan. Too many bad games with a few gems in the between.
Michael Owen – I grew up on the guy, and I can’t believe he’s 31. I can’t believe I’m edging towards 30. Lets get back to that some other time. Only 11 matches with 2 league goals. Owen was out of Ferguson’s plans for a big part of the season and injured again, this time his groin. His dream of becoming England’s greatest scorer won’t beĀ fulfilled. Owen has no chance in this race.
The other two – Federico Macheda got lucky in 2008-2009. Two lucky goals that meant a great deal in the title race with Liverpool that season. A good striker? Maybe. He is only 19, but his goalless spell at Genoa playing for Sampdoria might hint that he isn’t exactly the prodigy people once thought he was. Mame Biram Diouf – Nice player, nothing much else. Six goals in 29 matches for Blackburn probably count for more on a different side, but Diouf hasn’t shown anything either than slightly promising.
Well Fergie, I don’t get it. What headache? Now you’ve got Ashley Young as well, besides Chicharito and Rooney, he should chuck the rest of the fellas. Berbatov can contribute, sometimes even seem like aĀ legitimateĀ superstar, but he looks lazy and just draws too much fire from fans and pundits most of the time. I know that’s not a reason to get rid of a guy who cost so much money and has scored nearly 50 goals in his three seasons there. But I think Fergie can conjure some deal with someone around this continent and make something better out of it.
