Kind of an opposite day for the World’s number two and number four. Andy Murray was behind by two sets against Robin Haase but made an incredible comeback to push through into the third round? Rafael Nadal? He needed only two sets against Nicolas Mahut before the Frenchman retired just over an hour into the match.
Nadal struggled in the first round against Golubev, but had an easy time with Mahut’s serve and volley attempt. Nadal sent the balls flying past the no.99 in the world, who’ll probably be remembered only for his epic match with Isner in Wimbledon when his career is over, not too long from now. He never made it past a third round in a Grand Slam tournament.
Nadal? It was great to see him much more confident, much more comfortable with his game. He broke Mahut four times and hit 24 winners facing a style he hardly gets to play against, advancing into the third round on his title defense, looking for a second Grand Slam title this season and Revenge. Djokovic, you know.
The biggest match of the day was Andy Murray’s epic comeback. Not something you usually see from Murray, who’s mental toughness has been questionable looking back at his career. The Brit fell two sets behind against Robin Haase (41 in the world), who played great tennis during the first two sets.
Andy Murray predicted Haase would be bombarding him with his serve and forehand early and often and was proven right. Haase served and hit with force and command. It was Murray’s serve and forehand that fell apart time after time, losing 6-7, 2-6.
In the third set – everything changed. Murray broke Haase twice, and the Dutchman began getting treatment on his back, signaling the end of his success in the match. Murray’s big hitting was too much for Haase and his lack of mobility during the later stages of the match. Murray won the third, fourth and fifth set 6-2, 6-0 and 6-4.
