Amir Khan’s Way to Floyd Mayweather Jr

Amir Khan has been gunning for a shot at Floyd Matweather for quite some time now, announcing he’ll be moving up to the 147 lbs. weight class, giving up his Light Welterweight glory and titles for the chance to fight the new WBC Welterweight champion after beating, with quite a lot of controversy, Victor Ortiz in a fourth round knockout last Saturday.

Mayweather has been keeping himself busy before the Ortiz fight and probably won’t be media shy after the win. He talks Pacquiao subjects a lot, but he’s got enough time for everyone. He said he’s willing to fight Amir Khan, but only if Khan fights Jessie Vargas, a fighter under Mayweather’s promotion company, 17-0, who fought on the undercard of Mayweather – Ortiz, beating Joselito Lopez on a split decision.

Well, it seems that Vargas’ unimpressive win over Lopez has Khan sold – He didn’t impress any of us, If Floyd Mayweather says that I have to beat him, I would be more than happy to move up to 147 and beat him, and then fight Floyd Mayweather. Just last week Khan said that he is also in the business of putting up terms, and if Vargas wants to fight him, he needs to beat someone else before he gets a shot at Khan, the WBA and IBF Light Welterweight champions.

Well, before all that, Khan still has some business in the 140 division, closing out 2011. It took him some time to find an opponent for a third 2011 fight, but Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s), who’s only defeat came against Timothy Bradley (refuses to fight Khan) and also drew with Victor Ortiz nearly a year ago will be the man. Peterson has been dying for another title shot since the Bradley loss (unanimous decision).

Khan, for now, is speaking Mayweather, and the weaknesses he claims to have spotted during the Ortiz fight – Mayweather is good, but I saw a lot of mistakes and weaknesses that I’ve never seen before. Putting together my skills, power and Freddie Roach’s brain will be too much for Floyd.

  1. I must say that I was very discusted with Floyd Mayweathers performance and behavior during the Victor Ortiz fight on September 17th. I was one who was always willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He totally proved that he is nothing better than a THUG, and a very bad sportsman! What he did catching Victor Ortiz with those dirty shots was totally against what ANY great boxer would have done. His behavior and lack of respect for Larry Merchant was even more discusting. They never should have called that fight a KO and had them continue the fight. Floyd Maywearther had that surprised look on his face when Victor Ortiz was actually giving him a good fight! In the words of Peter Pan “BAD FORM FLOYD, BAD FORM!”

  2. @Michele actually Floyd was dominating the fight. He already won all 4 rounds. Also Ortiz was the one fustrated, because he could not see Floyds right hand, because of his speed. If you look at the scorecard. Ortiz threw over 200 punches and only landed 32, Floyd threw 140 and landed 87. You do the math. Yes Floyd knockout was dirty, but legal, and as a boxer myself, the #1 rule is “Protect yourself at all times”

  3. The whole of the uk are sick and tired of hearing khan blabber his mouth about mayweather that all he talks about, mayweather should forget khan,,khan ran from prescott all his life so its a bit strong coming from khan about people ducking him?.the only reason khan wants mayweather is becase he thinks hes getting older thats it….khan should study hagler hearns mike macullam chavez anyone remember them making excuses for not fighting opponents..go away khan your bad for the sport and all it stands for…mayweather is in a another class…

  4. Michelle, I also wanted to add about Larry Merchant, If you look back at all Mayweathers fights and see how Larry Merchant treats mayweather during his interviews, its not to congratulate him but more so put him down. We also forget that Ortiz threw a headbutt that could have ended someones career. TO me that is a thug and it doesn’t belong in the sport of boxing. That is true unsportsmanlike from Ortiz. What I saw from Floyd was a hug, a touch gloves and the ref said to fight. If victor didn’t see the ref say fight, that’s not Floyd fault.

  5. Mayweather is a chicken sh*t. He hand picks his opponents and refuses to fight manny. Judging by mayweathers physique, he’s probably been on gear to along with every other boxer at the beginning of thier career. If mayweather wants to fight khan, he better do it quick, since khan is maturing and getting more powerful by the second, within two years he’ll be to much for mayweather, to big, to strong, to fast and most importantly, a clever fighter. I think khans got more fans outside the UK then within, since the traditional uk supporters only support the over-rated pasty HATTON types, who basically look like them. HATTON was overrated but that didn’t stop your average joe at your local pub, chant out his name. MAN he got knocked out flat by mayweather !!!!!!!!

  6. Actually, Amir Khan is way more popular than you guys can imagine. The only reason the UK does not like Khan is because of his background, he’s Pakistani. I’m sure it hurts the UK, when they see a Brown Kid representing them. On the other hand, Amir Khan is the first Pakistani Boxer and he is also of Islamic Faith. If you don’t know, Muslims are very close knit, and so when they hear about a great, up and coming Pakistani/Muslim boxer, they automatically become fans. Floyd Mayweather may only have fans in the UK and USA, but Amir Khan has fans from all over the world, it’s a fact.
