Sergio Martinez to Face Manny Pacquiao?

Manny Pacquiao keeps hovering around opponents he’s already faced, waiting for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to finally pick up the glove and agree for the mega fight everyone has been waiting for. For Sergio Martinez, hands down the best Middleweight in the world today, the situation is kind of the same. No real competition in his division, and in order to get a big fight (with really big money), he’s willing to move down to face Pacquiao.

The Argentinian boxer, ranked no.2 or 3 on most pound for pound rankings, has been fighting twice a year since 2008. His next fight in 2011, after beating Sergiy Dzinziruk back in March, winning with a TKO in the 8th round. He made mince meat of the Light Middleweight champion, knocking him down five times during the fight. In 10 days he faces Brit Darren Barker in Atlantic City, an HBO fight. The highest quality of opponent? nope. Barker is undefeated (23-0), but this is his first big fight in the United States and he wasn’t very impressive back in April, beating Domenico Spada.

As with all great boxer, Martinez is making mandatory fights to stay in shape while he weights for a big catch. It’s the same for Manny Pacquiao. It seems everyone in the Welterweight area is gunning for Floyd Mayweather, be it Amir Khan who will probably have to go through Jessie Vargas in order to get that fight, or Manny Pacquiao. It’s been suggested that Sergio Martinez might be a good option for the next Floyd Mayweather fight. Right now, it doesn’t seem Mayweather is in a real hurry to find a next opponent, certainly not one who can really risk his undefeated record.

If you ask Martinez (47-2-2, 26 KOs), his next opponent in the ring should be Manny Pacquiao. He’s willing to lose some weight to get a chance at the number one boxer in the world. I am willing to go down to 150lbs to face Manny Pacquiao. It’s an incredible effort for my body. I walk around at 78 or 79 kilos (171 to 173lbs). To go down to that weight can be fatal for my health, but it can be done. With enough time, I think it’s possible to do.

Manny Pacquiao faced Antonio Margarito at the 150 lbs. catchweight back in November 2010. Pacquaio, despite the height disadvantage, literally destroyed Margarito, sending him straight to the hospital in a fight that should have been stopped well before its actual ending, an easy UD after 12 round for Pacquiao. Actually, Pacquiao’s ability to sustain his speed and technique despite rising through the weight classes has lead to the allegations from the Mayweather camp of his illegal substance use.

  1. It goes to show just how good Manny is the fact they are matching him with Middleweights.. Manny is already fighting above his weight and usualy climbs into the ring still under the welterweight limit of 147 ,whereas even if Martinez dropped down to 150 he would be back upto somewhere between 165-170 by the time they get into the ring..

If Martinez is finding it so hard to get chellenges at Middle, then why doesnt he do what Manny did gain say 10 1bs and challenge someone like David haye (who often weighs 210) at a catchweight of say who 205 that would be Haye 210 vs Martinez 190..

Truth is Martinez is picking on smaller men, and if Manny beat him at 150 then Manny beat a weight drained fighter tut tut…

Give Manny the credit he deserves, No 1 P4P..

  2. The truth is that Manny hasn’t faced anyone in their prime at WW, because he is a juiced up Media Creation! The truth is that he doesn’t have go fight these fighters after they have been beaten by Mayweather, he can fight them befor Mayweather softens them up. The truth is that he could fought JJM before he turned 39! The truth is, who cares about him facing Margacheato after he was previously KO’d by Mosley?

  3. Well then, mr Danny, why don’t you ask your idol Mayweather, the ducker, to fight the soften up Cotto or Margarito at 150 lbs. I’ll bet your idol with still going to duck then.

  4. Im one og maywheather biggist fan and still are but lost most of my repect to him
He know he has a hishest chance to beat pacman but still ducking the man
One gallon of blood before the fight get real man….

  5. Mayweather scared to fight the midget man, he is asking never heard in the history of boxing OSDT, He say’s if your the best take the test. you said your self your the best why don’t sign and take the fight, stop your BS and excuses.

  6. I would like to see Martinez/Manny, it would prove to be challenging bout for the two. I can’t see Mayweather fighting Manny. With all the talk coming from Pac’s camp about agreeing to all his outrageous demands, all Floyd has to do is call their “Bluff”. But we all know that he’ll just back into semi retirement and wait for another fighter he can easily pick off. Your telling me he saw Ortiz get dropped twice by Berto, twice by Maidana and then quit, and think to himself, “This guy will be a challenge.” Please, no way he fights Manny anytime soon. But, a guy can still hope. Live up to your word Floyd and, “Give the fans what they want.”

  7. It’s funny floyd prolly thought he would come back if he beat Ortiz and be p4p again but guess what? Who’s still #1 p4p? you guessed it pac haters its Pacman! he still number 1! not 2 or 3 but numero uno and floyd still number 2 maybe 3 not sure but definately not the top spot no thats manny’s spot. as long as manny pacman is still around floyd will ALWAYS be second fiddle man thats gotta suck too ROFL!

  8. all roads lead to manny and floyd should know this if he ever wants to be on top but in 20 years people will remember manny worldwide even ppl who aren’t boxing fans and only the fans of the sport will likely remember floyd.

  9. Lou Di Bella & Martinez are in need of serious cash by the way they’ve been acting since the Williams knock out. Pathetic to say the least. They should start calling out boxers in the higher weight division if they think they’re that good.

  10. Martinez could seriously hurt Pacquiao if they ever fought,
but that’s never gonna happen. There’s no way a fight for the
middle weight title should be taking place below the junior middle
weight limit anyways. He should just leave Pacquiao alone he’s too small for him.
Mayweather would be more capable of handling Martinezs size than Pacquiao, so
Martinez should pursue that match up.

  11. Mayweather is scared of a blemish on his record he will only fight beat up old men who should’ve retierd and young dudes he knows he can beat with no problem he’s a big mouth punk who when he talks he reminds me of a middle school kid Floyd if your so bad shut up and get in the ring with #1 p4p pacquiao

  12. What Martinez needs to do is perhaps move up in weight. Sure he’s cleaned out MW but that doesn’t mean only place to look is down. He should move up and perhaps challenge the winner of the Super 6 tourney. Pac/Floyd bring the excitement to the WW division. Martinez should try and do the same.

  13. Martinez and mayweather fight will never happen because floyd pick fighters he can beat. manny is not fighting floyd’s leftovers. Floyd fought dela hoya who lost to sugar shane and benard hopkins. Floyd fought juan manuel marquez who lost to manny pacquioa and chris john. Floyd fought zab judah who lost to Ksyta zoe. Floyd fought Victor ortiz who lost to Marcos Maidana. Floyd fought sugar shane who lost to vernon forrest. So who is fighting who leftovers?

  14. ok. maybe you’re all right, try to watch and see the record. mayweather fought a lots of undefeated. how many pacman faced undefeated? then you’ll say that floyd is a cherry picker? when pacman is in featherweight, why didn’t he fought vazquez and rafael marquez on that time instead fighting leduava the african malnourish. at lightweight, he fought only david diaz not a real champion they just gave the belt to him that’s why he’s a titleholder to him. pacman didn’t fight juan diaz, cassamayor, katsidiz becoz he’s avoiding them. all of those are game plan of bob arum. cotto and margarito are under bob arum promotion. why don’t observed sometimes. mayweather defeat most lightweights undefeated through welterweight. in boxing is a business, but mayweather is implementing the real sport just like an olympic. so if you’re an olympian and true warrior, there’s no need to be scared the test.

  15. Floyd Mayweather jr is certainly not a fighter who should even come close to obtaining any type of recognition from his win over ortiz.

Come on now. Ortiz is only 24 and he hasn’t even fully developed his frontal lobes yet. So ortiz’s decision to headbutt is understandable from his maturity level – he has probably damaged more than enough to extend his frontal lobs from becoming fully developed out to age 27!

Now Floyd? Mid thirties, kids and lots of experience when it comes to professional boxing? Yes, I have lost my respect for Floyd Mayweather as an image to the sport of professional boxing because of his decision to swing twice when his only opponent’s head/body language was clearly reading “im sorry and let’s wait on the ref”. Indeed a cheap shot.

    I would love to watch a re-match!
