While Manny Pacquiao gets ready for his Juan Manuel Marquez fight (for a third time), Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his announcement at a May 5 2012 fight plans, wanting it to be the biggest fight possible, with a date and venue (Las Vegas MGM Grand) already set, gets us thinking we’ll finally get the mega fight we’ve been wanting for years.

Too early to jump for joy, but finally some positive signs from the Mayweather camp. Leonard Ellerbe, an adviser, spoke about Mayweather’s plans. The first thing on business – Not going on a long hiatus like the 16 month out of the ring before the Victor Ortiz fight in September. Mayweather has a date and venue set for his next fight. Floyd made it very clear that he wants to give the fans the biggest fights that are out there. He wants to stay active.

Now, there are about two-three promising possibilities – Manny Pacquiao, which would probably generate the biggest purse in boxing history, certainly when Non-Heavyweights are involved. Amir Khan, who’s been aching for a shot at Mayweather in 2012, and will be pursuing that fight ever harder after his Lamont Peterson fight in December, if he wins.

Sergio Martinez has also indicated he’s interested in fighting both Pacquiao and Mayweather, as the opportunities for big paydays and a chance for glory in the Middleweight division are a tad limited. Bernard Hopkins also said he’s willing to take on the Welterweights, but his injury will rule him out for quite some time.

But we all know what the big prize, what the biggest possible fight, is. We’re looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella. We’re going to do everything in our power to make the biggest fight out there for the fans and we all know what the fight is.

Maybe it was Bob Arum’s comments last week, part of the Pacquiao – Marquez promotional tour. Maybe it’s just all part of Mayweather’s big plan. The fantastic numbers of his Victor Ortiz fight, despite the long hiatus, or maybe because of them, are just another sign that it’s time to cash in on this before the whole debate and wait gets a little, stale.

Of the problems the fight is actually facing, Mayweather’s legal problems could be the biggest. Yes, there’s the drug protocol, but we’re probably past that. The money? It won’t be an issue, eventually, despite everything said about Mayweather’s greed, even by Manny himself. It’s all about whether Mayweather actually wants to fight, or is he just… well, a bit afraid. Still, he needs to win his courtroom battles, or come out with minimal losses, before we know the dream of many fight fans will finally come true.
