2011 College Football Week 13 – We Need Playoffs, Not BCS Rankings

Rivalry week didn’t give us the upset count we got last week but as usual, too many one loss teams currently have a case as to why they should be playing against LSU, unless the Tigers mess up against Georgia in the SEC Championship game. For now, it looks like Alabama, not even in their conference championship game, will get the chance for revenge, my favorite sports related word.

Arkansas were the big hope for pretty much everyone to stop LSU. Georgia don’t seem to stand a chance, but who knows. The Hogs made a game of it for three quarters, but Les Miles’ Tigers are just too good by a wide margin then anyone in the nation right now. Except for Alabama.

And lets not forget about the Houston Cougars. Not in a BCS conference, but perfect, and in the top 10, after another Case Keenum stat-stuffer, beating Tulsa 48-16. Like a few times in the past, a “small” school will end up undefeated when the season is over, possibly, but won’t get a chance to prove it’s national title credentials.

Virginia Tech, what about them? Impressed in their Virginia derby, shutting out the Cavaliers 38-0. Frank Beamer’s team have made it to five BCS bowls since 1999. Lets say they win the ACC Conference Championship. Won’t they deserve a National title shot? As usual, we’re at the mercy of computers.

What about Stanford? 11-1, but they won’t play for their Conference championship because of that loss to Oregon. Isn’t that the same situation with Alabama? Stanford did beat Notre Dame 28-14. The Oregon Ducks, 10-2, winning the Civil War for the fourth straight time, will play for the Pac-12 title, but won’t be in consideration for the national title, because of their two losses.

And there’s still Oklahoma State, who have their Oklahoma derby next week, to decide who wins the Big 12. Can they finally beat the Sooners? Oklahoma are hard to read this season, but even if the rankings don’t show it, they are the favorites in the Bedlam series, as usual.

So what can we say? LSU are the only certain thing in this whole mess, if they beat Georgia. They should, convincingly. The rest? A complete BCS mess, like many like to protect and defend. The system is good financially, but bad in terms of sportsmanship and fairness. At some point, money has got to stop winning.

  1. And who gets left out of your PLAYOFFS?
Boise State because they didn’t beat TCU?
Others because they didn’t win their conferences?
You are obviously too young to remember what it was like years ago when #1&#2 never got to meet in the post season.
The BCS is as close as we are going to get for a fair system.
Your hoping for a system like college basketball, in which some teams get left behind and on the bubble. Much like March madness!

    • @jim Someone is always going to get screwed, but I think that an 8 team playoff will usually include every team with a case to the national title game. A team or two will always be left out, but I think it’s better than just a #1 vs #2 based on rankings and computers.

  2. The BCS is ruining college football for me.

First they claim, “every regular season game is a playoff game.”

Now they are back pedaling on that, so they can get a rematch of SEC teams that have already played and one, and maybe both, will not have won their conference.

Sorry, if you can’t win your conference you DO NOT deserve to play for the national title! End of story. Go cry somewhere else.

One of the reasons so many conferences now have a championship game is due to this fact–the champions of conferences should play for the national title. The reality is, just add one or two conference & regional championship games and we would have a national championship game based on a “playoff” along with bowl games–why is this so hard for them to put together?

The only reason I can think of is, the BCS allows them to continue excluding teams they know will beat the over-ranked teams from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, etc.

This year we get to watch a love fest for the SEC–what a crock. The SEC–the conference who pads their schedules with cupcakes and half the teams in the conference SUCK and only two teams are actually good.

Sorry Alabama, YOU LOST! Get over it. You did not win your conference championship and DO NOT deserve a shot at the national title. End of story!

If the BCS title game ends up being two SEC teams. . . I won’t watch it or any in the future–they can go FTS.

  3. Dear AppleFUD, By my record my University, LSU has beaten the number 2 team, two number 3 teams (Ark and Oregon)the number 16, 17, 20 and 25 teams as they were ranked along the way and now has to face Georgia, probably ranked 13 or higher, to get to the BSC championship game. For an easy, Heisman-like game I would like to see my team run up the score against another conference champion. Unfortunately if you study the form we must face Alabama again. If you don’t understand that the LSU – ‘Bama game was probably the best match of the year, chess on top of an evenly matched heavyweight championship bout for football teams then we disagree.

    • @George I don’t think the problem is with LSU. They have beaten everything thrown at them, including the second best team in the nation. The problem is – why should Alabama get another shot at them? There are other one-loss teams from the other conferences (weaker, that’s true) that deserve a shot at the Tigers.

  4. IMHO not to mention the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Polls and likely the Harris Poll when it comes out later today, and many well respected college football analysts, Alabama is clearly the #2 team in the nation. And except for a couple of missed field-goals and a pass play called back that would have set-up a 1st and goal in their only loss of the season to LSU, would be holding the undisputed #1 rank at this point.

A win over Alabama by any other contender to the right to play in the BCS National Championship Game by Oklahoma State, Stanford, Virgina Tech, Oregon, Boise State or Huston, would have to be considered a long-shot upset that likely just wouldn’t happen!

I think a rematch of LSU and Alabama for the National Championship is the correct match ~ and I predict that in part because of the loss in the regular season to the Tigers, that “extra impetus” will facilitate a convincing Alabama win over LSU!

In any event it should be a great football game and end in a score much higher than the 6 to 9 overtime final tally that we witnessed on November 5th ~ LOL !!!

  5. BCS Playoff & Bowl System

    8 Team Playoff with Bowls

    1. Start the playoffs right after the season ends and play for the next two weeks after that.
    2. The teams that make it to the finals of the tournament would play in the National Title game.
    3. The two teams that lost in the semis would play each other in a bowl game.
    4. The four teams that lost in the first round would be split up to play two separate bowl games.
    5. The Fiesta bowl and all other bowls can have teams that didn’t make the playoffs.
    6. Then bowl season would start as usual.
