Brazil Avoid Upset, Beat USA 3-2 in Confed Cup Final

It wasn’t nearly like the first time the two met in the group stages… The United Stated took the lead after only nine minutes with Clint Dempsey putting the Americans in front, and 17 minutes later it was Landon Donovan with his 40th international goal, finishing a brilliant counter attack with his left.

Brazil controlled the first half but just couldn’t break the US defense and Tim Howard at goal. The second half was a different story. The Brazilians put it into gear and a minute after the break, Luis Fabiano made it 2-1 with a nice effort while spinning around his defender.

In the 73rd minute it was Fabiano again. Kaka beat Spector on the wing, crossed it to Robinho who nailed the ball to the crossbar, but Fabiano was there to score on the rebound.

Elano, who came on at the 67th minute, delivered a corner straight to Lucio’s head in the 84th minute, giving Brazil their deserved winning goal, and also making them the Confederations Cup winners for a second straight time and their third time overall. The Americans are left with the compliments and the disappointment of losing a 2-0 lead in one half.
