Devon Alexander didn’t win a title belt, but he looked so impressive by beating Marcos Maidana as the two made their first venture into Welterweight, and bigger fights and nice, shiny alphabet belts are certainly waiting for him in the near future.

Maidana might be a big puncher, but he just doesn’t have the boxing skills that Alexander has and at 28, losing his third professional fight, even his notorious power didn’t look as impressive. Alexander out-punched Maidana 165-93 and 149-85 in power shots. He won the 10-round fight with a Unanimous decision and a 100-90, 100-90, 99-91 on the scorecards.

The rise in weight? Did a world of good for Alexander, who lost his WBC and IBF Light Welterweight belts after a technical decision in a fight with Timothy Bradley 13 months ago. Headbutts tend to be a very common occurrence in Bradley fights, who uses his head like a battering ram at times. Manny Pacquiao will get to see that for himself in just over 3 months, and we’ll get to see just how Bradley does in the 147 category.

Alexander didn’t lose any speed, while Maidana looked slow and uncomortable under the added pounds – I was slower. He was very fast and complicated. Alexander was obviously very happy with his performance, showing combinations multiple times, leaving Maidana on the ropes after on of them in the sixth round.

We went back to the drawing board and moved up in weight and fixed the problem, I want to continue to learn at 147. At 25, Alexander has a lot of potential of becoming one of the top pound-4-pound fighters in the world. The most loaded division in the sport, not even mentioning the big two, with Ortiz, Khan (pretty soon), Bradley, Berto. Plenty of big fights, plenty of chances for Alexander to prove his worthy of the nickname “Alexander the Great.”

Timothy Bradley? There’s no doubt he’s a very tough fighter, but maybe Alexander got a shot at him too soon. If his Maidana fight is any indication, fighting at Welterweight suits Devon Alexander perfectly. Bradley isn’t as exciting, although a second fight between the two, in the future, at Welterweight, might prove against that Bradley is the better fighter.
