Unlike Wolfsburg who won their first competitive match last night, AZ didn’t have such a great 2009-2010 debut. And their game was a league game. AZ Alkmaar didn’t lose any important players during the summer, but they did have a coaching change, with Louis Van Gaal leaving to Bayern Munich and Ronald Koeman, not riding a huge success wave in recent years, taking his place. The result on opening night? Heracles, who finished 15th last season in the Dutch league, beat AZ in Almelo 3-2, leading 3-0 after 61 minutes, with goals from Everton Ramos Da Silva, Willy Overtoom and this brilliant free kick from Mark Jan Fledderus. Pelle and El Hamdaoui scored a quick double to make the scoreline a bit more respectable.
