Manny Pacquiao Needs Mayweather, Not Juan Manuel Marquez

Manny Pacquiao, after his fight with Timothy Bradley this June, will look across thoe boxing world and look for a new opponent. Unfortunately, with Floyd Mayweather probably not giving Pacquiao the kind of money he’s looking for, we might have to settle for yet another, fourth, Pacquiao – Juan Manuel Marquez fight.

While the first three fights between the two fighters, especially the second one, have been highly entertaining and close. That doesn’t mean that boxing needs another fight. Especially Pacquiao doesn’t, having everything to lose against the 38 year old Mexican fighter, the eight time world champion in six different weight classes.

It’s not a question of great money or a great fight. It probably would be a great fight. It definitely will be profitable for both sides. Not Mayweather great, but guaranteed for over 1 million PPV buys, with Pacquiao having the dominant share of the money. That’s not satisfying anyone, or helping anyone in their quest for all time glory. Just another fight we’ve seen three times. I think people have had enough.

But this being a Bob Arum run show, don’t be surprised if that’s what you’ll get. Arum wanted to strike gold for a fourth time right after Pacquiao’s controversial win over Marquez. Roach pushed for other directions. The Mayweather option fell apart and Pacquiao didn’t go for the obvious choice. Arum knows Marquez keep on believing he should have won at least two of those fights. There’s a good chance that is the only thing on his mind, the only thing left for him to achieve in his career, beating Manny Pacquiao.

So as the latest collapse in negotations, if there ever were any, between Pacquiao and Mayweather occured ,we slowly realize that whatever happens this June, and May, people are already looking for their September-October-November fights. Marquez, up for a fight against Sergey Fedchenko, is thinking about only one thing. Feeling he got robbers, feeling he deserves another shot, a final shot.

For Pacquiao, it’s wide open after the Bradley fight, win or lose. Everyone usually makes their fights after Pacquiao and Mayweather choose their opponents. It’ll probably be the same thing this time around. With 2012 looking like another year in which Pacquiao vs Mayweather won’t happen, Juan Manuel Marquez might be the next Manny Pacquiao opponent, something that doesn’t do boxing any good. Probably not for Pacquiao either.
