The top five scorers all time in the MLS – only players who have scored more than a 100 goals in their American careers. By the way – number one is not American.

Number 5 – Taylor Twellman, New England Revolution – 101 goals

The Minnesota born striker reached the MLS in 2002, after a few unsuccessful years of trying to break through into Bundesliga club Munich 1860. Drafted by the New England Revolution, who he stills plays for today, Twellman was an immediate success. He scored 23 goals in his debut season, finishing second in the league in scoring and in the MVP race. He scored 15 in 2003 but 2004 wasn’t a great year for the guy, finishing with only 9 goals.

In 2005 Twellman rebounded, scoring 17 goals, winning the MLS golden boot and winning the MVP award for that season. He reached the 100 goals mark this July, against New York. In the last couple of years the MLS has turned down European offers for Twellman, who is very unhappy with the refusals. He has so far scored only 2 goals in 2009, sidelined by an injury most of the season.

Number 4 – Jason Kreis, retired, 1996-2007 – 108 goals

Part of the inaugural season of the MLS, Jason Kreis, who started his MLS career with the Dallas Burn is also the club’s first goal scorer. In 1999, his best season, Kreis scored 18 goals, a league best, becoming the first American born player to win the MLS MVP. He was the first player to record a 15 goal – 15 assists season in MLS history. Kreis scored 11 goals in 2000 and 13 goals in 1996 and 2002. In June 2004, after scoring his 89th career goal, he became the MLS all time leading scorer, until being dethroned in 2007. Kreis spent 2005-2007 with expansion team Real Salt Lake, becoming the teams first goal scorer. In 2007 he retired and became the team’s head coach, after 58 games and 17 goals with the club.

Number 3 – Jeff Cunningham, FC Dallas – 112 goals

The 33 year old Jamaican born Cunningham has been in the MLS since 1998, and his current club, FC Dallas, is his fifth club. He played the Columbus Crew from 1998-2004, scoring 12 goals in 1999, 10 goals in 2001 and 16 in 2002, a year he was chosen to the MLS bext XI. He played one season with the Colorado Rapids, scoring 12 goals in 26 games. He then moved to Real Salt Lake, where he spent a season and a bit at, scoring 19 goals in 38 games with the club. FC Toronto was his next stop, but he didn’t find a regular starting place there, scoring only six goals in 32 games with the team. He was traded to Dallas, and after a rough first year with the club, 2009 looks much better for him, scoring 8 goals in 17 games.

Number 2 – Ante Razov, Chivas USA, 114 goals

Another member of the MLS inaugural year, Ante Razov has been in the MLS since 1996, playing for five clubs till now, although he hasn’t played a game in 2009. Razov, who was born in California to Croatian immigrants played for the Los Angeles Galaxy in his first two seasons but played only six games. After his move to Chicago in 1998, his career really soared. He scored 76 goals in 155 games for the Chicago Fire, winning the MLS Cup with them in 1998 and three US Open Cups in 1998, 2000 and 2003. His best season came in 2000, scoring 18 goals. He never scored less than 10 goals for the Fire, except for 2001, when he spent most of his time with Racing de Ferrol in a one season stint with the Spanish club and 2004, when he played only 13 games and clashed regularly with the club’s head coach, Dave Sarachan. He spent 2005 with Columbus and the Metrostars, scoring 7 goals in 25 games. In 2006 he moves to Chivas, and has scored 30 goals in 76 games for the club. Razov is the last played to win a cap for the United Stated national team while still a college player.

Number 1 – Jaime Moreno – D.C. United – 128 goals

On August 2007 Moreno scored his 109th MLS career goal, becoming the number one scorer all time in the MLS, surpassing Jason Kreis. He is the only player with more than 100 goals an 100 assists in his MLS career.

Moreno has been in the MLS since it’s inaugural year in 1996, and has played the entire time with D.C. United, except for one short stint in 2003 with the Metrostart and a short loan period at Middlesbrough in England. Moreno has won the MLS cup four times with United (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), won the MLS golden boot in 1997 scoring 16 goals in 20 games and was selected in 2006 to the MLS all time best XI, celebrating the league’s 10th birthday. Moreno scored 16 goals in a season two more times – 1998 and 2005, and has scored more than 10 goals four more times. At 35, he is having another good season with D.C. United, scoring 6 goals and adding 3 assists in 14 games.
