Saturday Results From the Big Leagues


With the English Premiership kicking off things this weekend, only the Italian and Spanish leagues are left before all the big leagues are in full action mode. For now, will settle for the Premiership, where Chelsea and Arsenal opened with wins, the Bundesliga, where Wolfsburg remained perfect and Bayern remained winless and Ligue 1, where the champs Bordeaux won again.

English Premier League

The opening weekend in the premier league began with Chelsea hosting Hull City, and Didier Drogba scoring two goals for Chelsea, including an injury time winner to bring them back from 1-0 from a Stephen Hunt goal. Fulham came to Portsmouth and beat Pompy 1-0, with Bobby Zamora scoring the only goal early on. Wigan shocked Aston Villa at Birmingham, grabbing a 2-0 away win, with Hugo Rodallega and Jason Koumas scoring. Stoke gave a cold Premiership welcome to Burnley, beating the promoted side 2-0, with Ryan Shawcross scoring and Stephen Jordan adding an own goal. Manchester City 2.0 started the 2009-2010 campaign with a 2-0 away win, a rarity last season, over Blackburn. Emmanuel Adebayor scored on his league debut for City and Stephen Ireland finished things off in the 90th minute. Wolves, another promoted side, and also lost 2-0, at home, to West Ham. Mark Noble and Matthew Upson scored for the Hammers. Sunderland also grabbed an away win, beating Bolton 1-0, with Darren Bent scoring 5 minutes from the start. THE result of the weekend came from Goodison Park, as Everton got thrashed 6-1 by Arsenal, who played brilliantly, with Cesc Fabregas scoring two, and Denilson, Vermaelen (debut), Gallas and Eduardo Da Silva. Louis Saha grabbed the consolation goal for the home side.

German Bundesliga

Gameweek 2 in the Bundesliga – Bayer Leverkusen beat Hoffenheim 1-0, with Stefan Kießling scoring the only goal, his second of the season. Bayern Munich drew 1-1 at home with Werder Bremen, their second 1-1 draw. Bremen led 1-0 with Mesut Ozil scoring the opener, and Mario Gomez equalized for Bayern, his first goal for the Bavarians. Frankfurt and Nurenberg also ended their match at a 1-1 draw, with Caio opening the scoring for Frankfurt and Albert Bunjaku equalizing for the visitors. Hamburg hammered Dortmund 4-1. Guy Demel, Ze Roberto, Jose Paolo Guerrero (both ex-Bayern players) and Marcus Berg scored for Hamburg. Nelson Haedo Valdez scored the only goal for Dortmund. Hannover and Mainz also ended their match at 1-1, with Aristide Bance scoring for Mainz and Jiri Stajner equalizing via penalty. Stuttgart grabbed their first win of the season, beating Freiburg 4-2, as Elson doubled, Progrebnyak scored his first goal for the club and Julian Schieber closing the deal. Mohamadou Idrissou scored two for Freiburg. The champions Wolfsburg remained perfect, beating FC Koln / Cologne 3-1, despite Koln leading 1-0 from a Fabrice Ehret goal. Edin Dzeko, a Wome own goal and Obafemi Martins (debut) left Koln as the only team with no points so far. Wolfsburg are the only team with 6 points, and FC Koln the only one with zero, closing the two ends of the league.

French Ligue 1

Gameweek 2 – Lyon beat Valenciennes 1-0, with Bafetimbi Gomis scoring his first goal for the club. Nancy crush Monaco 4-0, remaining perfect, as Issiar Dia, Andre Luiz and a Paul Alo’o Efoulou double did the damage. Lens beat Auxerre 2-0, with Kevin Monnet-Paquet and Abdoulrazak Boukari scoring for the home side. Auxerre have yet to get a point this season. Lorient and Montpillier finished in a 2-2 draw. Alberto Costa and Emir Spahic put the visitors 2-0 after 67 minutes, but Kevin Gameiro and a last minute goal by Laurent Koscielny kept one point with Lorient. PSG won for the first time this season, beating Le Mans 3-1, despite Thorstein Helstad putting the visitors 1-0 ahead after 21 minutes. Mevlut Erding, Frederic Thomas (own goal) and Ludovic Giuly scored for Paris. Tolouse also got their first win of the season, beating St Etienne 3-1. Paulo Machado, André-Pierre Gignac and Moussa Sissoko scored for Tolouse. Emmanuel Riviere scored for the losing side. The Champions Bordeaux are also perfect, grabbing a 3-2 away win at Sochaux. Bordeaux led 3-0 before the first half ended – Maroune Chamakh, Wendel and a Sochaux own goal, but a Charlie Davies double put some pressure on Blanc’s team until the final whistle. Nancy and Bordeaux are the only teams right now with 6 of 6, but with three games tomorrow more teams can join the perfect ranks.

Other Results From Around Europe –

The Scottish Premier League began, with champions Rangers beating Falkirk 4-1, as Kenny Miller scored twice for Rangers. Celtic also opened with a win, beating Aberdeen 3-1, as Aiden McGeady grabbed a brace. In Holland, AZ beat RKC 6-0, with El Hamdaoui and Maarten Martens both scoring twice. Twente climbed to the top of the league, at least temporarily, beating ADO 1-0, with N’Kufo scoring.
