Champions League Qualifiers First Leg – Second Night

After yesterdays five games, highlights by Arsenal beating Celtic in Glasgow and Sporting Lisbon drawing 2-2 with Fiorentina, here’s tonight’s action and goals – Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) hosting Debrecen (Hungary), Lyon hosting Anderlecht, Panathinaikos hosting Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) hosting Maccabi Haifa (Israel) and Ventspils (Latvia) hosting FC Zurich (Switzerland) –

Lyon crushed Anderlecht 5-1, leading 4-0 by the end of the first half. Gomis with 2, Lisandro Lopez, Michel Bastos and Pjanic scored for the French, Matias Suarez scored the only goal for the Belgians.

Atletico Madrid made a huge step towards the Champions League group stage by grabbing a fantastic away win in Greece, beating PAO 3-2. Maxi Rodriguez, Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero scored for the Spaniards, Salpingidis and former Liverpool player Sebastian Leto scored for PAO.

Another away win – Maccabi Haifa, who were the first Israeli team to reach the Champions League group stage back in the 2002-2003 season, beating Manchester United 3-0 in that season, came back from Austria with a 2-1 away win in Salzburg. Gadir scored for the visitors first before ex-Bayern Munich player Zickler scored the equalizer. Shlomi Arbeitman scored the winner for Haifa.

Debrecen also came up with an away win in Bulgaria, 2-1 over Levski Sofia. Bodnar and Czvithovics scored for the winners. Cedric Bardon, who played in Israel and in the Champions League last season with Anathorsis of Cyprus, scored for Levski.

And our final game – another away win. Zurich came up with an easy 3-0 win in Latvia over Ventspils – the team everyone in the champions draw wanted to get. Former PSV Wonderkid Johan Vonlanthen, Silvan Aegerter and Dusan Djuric scored for Zurich.
