Every summer and it’s the same thing – Luka Modric is tempted by offers to lure him away from Tottenham. This year, this summer, as always, seems to be the year the Croatian midfielder leaves Spurs for a bigger club. All fingers are pointing at Spain this time, with Real Madrid as the obvious choice.

Last season Modric wanted to complete a €40 million move to Chelsea, which didn’t come through, and left him unsatisfied and disillusioned in the beginning of the season, almost not wanting to start it. Harry Redknapp, they say, convinced him to give his best for a club he felt he no longer should play for, and Modric had another fantastic season in white, scoring 4 goals and adding six assists. It wasn’t enough for a Champions League finish and Modric, regarded by most as one of the best central midfielders in the world, wants Champions League football.

Now that the Euro is over for Croatia and Modric, it’s time to get down to business. Spurs have yet to appoint a new manager, but it seems that Harry Redknapp’s departure will be followed by other players making their ways to richer shores, as the lure of Champions League football continues to be the greatest plague for underachieving clubs, no matter how big they are and how well they’re paying.

With Modric’s price tag rumored to be at £40-35 million, there are a few clubs that can afford his services. With all of the fingers pointing to Spain, Real Madrid, like always, look like the obvious choice of his next destination. In Spain, probably only Real Madrid and Barcelona can offer these kinds of sums and the option of Champions League plus the opportunity for titles. Atletico Madrid can probably spend a similar sum as well, but that wouldn’t be much of a change when compared with Tottenham.

It’s Croatian players and ex-players who are talking about Modric’s future in Spain, not Modric himself, trying to remain loyal, at least by words and actions. Behind the scenes, as usual, is were all the action is. Agents and general managers working to get something done. Tottenham would like to hold on to their best player along with Gareth Bale, but they know that they can’t keep denying him what he really wants, which seems to be playing in Spain.

Mate Bilic, Sporting Gijon – He wants to play in the Spanish league. He loves the Premier League but he wants to play in Spain. He’s very close to agreeing a move.

Davor Suker, ex Real Madrid – Luka Modric is a player who could play for Real Madrid. He needs to be playing for a team that will win trophies. He’d be perfect for them. I would recommend that Florentino Perez signs him. If he doesn’t sign for Real Madrid, he’ll end up at Manchester City or Chelsea. He has to leave Tottenham to win trophies.

Even his national team and club teammate, Vedran Corluka, thinks Modric’s days with Spurs are numbered. He also refers to the fact that someone as talented as Modric, who also keeps hearing about how good he is, will always strive to play for a team that offers him a chance of glory and the best competition. Tottenham, despite all of the praise they received during the Harry Redknapp era, are simply not that team at the moment.
