Wimbledon 2012 – Mardy Fish Hits Line Judge in the Face With His Serve

Tennis can be a dangerous sport if you’re unlucky. Just like in the Mardy Fish – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Wimbledon match in the fourth round, as a Mardy Fish serve nailed an innocent line judge in the face with his serve, just as she was calling it out.

She got hit right in the eye and after a close examination by famous doctor Tsonga, she had to be replaced. Maybe it was a warning from Fish to take a closer look at his serves from now on, but it was probably just a bad bounce. She was applauded off the grass, or maybe the crowd were just so happy to see one of the officials get hurt.

Fish did go on to win the first set of the match, but then Tsonga, trying to reach the Wimbledon semifinal for the second consecutive year, swept the rest of the match, winning in four sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Tsonga will face Philipp Kohlschreiber (30th in the world) in the quarterfinals, with both him and Andy Murray enjoying the fact that there’s no Rafael Nadal anymore in their half of the draw.

For Fish, currently 12th in the world, it was only the second time in his career that he reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, failing to reach his second consecutive quarterfinal on the London grass.
