Transfer Rumors 2012 – Chelsea Still After Andre Schurrle

Having their first bid for Leverkusen winger Andre Schurrle rejected hasn’t stopped Chelsea, one of the busiest sides if not the busiest of them all in this off-season, from trying to sign the 21 year old German international, working on a new bid to get him across the channel.

Schurrle was the target of a €20 million offer from Chelsea earlier this week, but Wolfgang Holzhauser, the club’s CEO rejected it, saying Bayer were planning to hang on to the talented player at the moment, although hinted at the fact that an improved offer might be too good to turn down.

Schurrle isn’t a home grown talent, joining Leverkusen in 2011 after a very impressive 2010-2011 season with Mainz, scoring 15 goals. He scored 7 league goals for Leverkusen as he helped the club to a fifth place finish and reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League before getting knocked out by Barcelona.

In 16 caps for the national team since 2010, making his debut at the age of 20, he has scored 7 goals, three of them coming in the qualifying tournament to Euro 2012. In the European championship he played in only one match, starting in the 4-2 win over Greece, positioned on the left wing before being substituted for Mario Gomez. He has seen his fair share of criticism this season from his lack of clinical finishing since moving to Bayer from Mainz.

Chelsea have already signed one German player this season – Marko Marin from Werder Bremen for £6.5 million, but their crown jewel so far has been the young Belgian phenom, Eden Hazard, making his way from Lille for £32 million. Chelsea have been trying to sign Hulk from Porto, to no avail up to this point and may have or haven’t signed Oscar dos Santos, a 20 year old midfielder from Internacional in Brazil who will be playing in the Olympic football tournament.

Yesterday everything was pointing towards Oscar being sold to Chelsea for €25 million, but both the player and his Brazilian clubs denied the reports, claiming simply – I’m Staying. Be assured that’s not the last you’ve heard of the matter.
