Despite Andre Villas-Boas taking over and immediately beginning with signings at Tottenham, Luka Modric still wants to leave the club for something bigger and better and most importantly – a team that promises Champions League football. To Real Madrid and Manchester United from previous rumors now join PSG, one of the few clubs who can actually afford the high asking price.
Like Arsenal, Tottenham chiefs and most of their players can shout about the club being a big one and not a feeder/seller kind of club. Truth is that without the Champions League, Tottenham aren’t at the same level of United, Chelsea, Manchester City and others across the continent who offer recent titles and UCL opportunities right now, not in the projected and potential-filled future.
Carlo Ancelotti has praised Modric more than once during and after Euro 2012, which saw Modric play very well but get knocked out with Croatia, falling behind Italy and Spain in the group stage. Along with Mario Mandzukic, Modric drew plenty of praise from across the board for his performance in the three matches.
I must say that I didn’t have to watch the European Championship to understand what kind of talent he has. I knew his capabilities before. Now he has confirmed it for those who didn’t know, or appreciate, his quality. Modric is an outstanding player and in my opinion he is at this time one of the best midfielders in the world.
But are PSG involved in trying to sign one of the best midfielder in Europe over the last couple of years, with his price rumored to be around €40-35 million?
I know what you are most interested in at this time, but I have to disappoint you: I can’t talk publicly about the transfer market. You have to understand and accept that, because it would be foolish on my part to talk openly about targets and activity with regard to high-quality players.
Modric came to Tottenham from Dinamo Zagreb for £16.5 million in the summer of 2008, scoring 17 goals and adding 26 assists for the club in the four seasons since his arrival. Tottenham have already completed three signings this summer – Jan Vertonghen from Ajax (£9 million), Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim (£8 million) and completing the move of Emannuel Adebayor from Manchester City after a loan season, for £6 million. They have sold two other Croatian players – Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka.
