If Chelsea want to get Oscar from Internacional, they’re going to have to spend more money than initially thought, as the 20 year old Brazilian is expected to become the most expensive transfer ever to come out of the Brazilian league, while Andre Schurrle from Leverkusen is officially (for now) off the table.

But lets begin with what might and should happen before we reach what can’t and won’t. Last week it looked like a done deal – Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior, another one of the hordes of attacking midfielders in Brazilian football right now, was on his way to Chelsea after it was reported the clubs agreed to a €25 million transfer fee.

48 Hours later, denials from both clubs and the player himself taught us to be wary of early announcements regarding signings. Don’t believe what your read or see until you witness a player in the new club’s uniform. After the initial rejection, Internacional president announced that the deal can happen, for the right amount.

I want the transfer of Oscar to be the biggest deal ever in Brazilian football. And the Chelsea offer isn’t that far from that. If regarding Oscar we get offers that match our expectations, we’ll negotiate. But they have to be of the value that mean significant resources for Internacional.

The initial €20-25 offer was described by the Brazilian team as more of an enquiry than an actual offer. Oscar himself, a six time senior national team international and part of the team that will play in the 2012 Olympic games is keeping rather quiet around the whole subject, saying he’s currently staying with Internacional, waiting for the clubs and his agent to work out a deal, but won’t be disappointed if it won’t happen.

He has 19 goals and 20 assists for Internacional over the last three seasons, winning two State titles with the club in the Recopa Sudamericana in 2011.

Another team that has rejected Chelsea offers for a young star is Leverkusen, the 21-year old German international (16 caps, 7 goals), who have already rejected a €20 million offer from Chelsea for the winger. It seems that there won’t be any option of finding even ground on the matter, as Schurrle is indispensabile to the German club, especially in the current market.

There is no alternative to the decision of not selling Andre Schurrle. We are unable to sign a replacement. Those adequate players that are available are too expensive and therefore we would be forced to sign a weaker player overpriced. The matter is over with and I have also told Andre so. We have not received any new bid from Chelsea for Andre Schurrle. And we really do not want to talk about this topic anymore.

Schurrle has spent only one season with Bayer Leverkusen so far, scoring 9 goals in 40 appearances (all competitions) for the club, helping them to a 5th place finish in the Bundesliga and reach the round of 16 in the Champions League. He made two appearances in Euro 2012 for the national side.

Chelsea, despite all of their chasing around young players in Europe and the world, have only managed two signings this summer – Marko Marin of Werder Bremen for £6.5 million and Eden Hazard from Lille for £32 million.
