Day 3 of the 2012 Olympic games will be once again focused on what happens on the pool, especially in the men’s 200 meters freestyle race, as Ryan Lochte will try and get over his disappointing 4×100 relay performance against the surging Sun Yang, trying to win his second gold medal in three days.

More in the pool on the day – Women’s 100 meters backstroke, Men’s 100 meters backstroke, Women’s 100 meters breaststroke. We’ll also have finals in Diving, Fencing, Gymnastics, Judo, Shooting and Weightlifting.

Diving – Men’s Synchronized 10 Meters Platform

China are the obvious favorites, despite using a duo that wasn’t among the gold medal winners in 2008 or in the 2011 World Championships, while the German duo of Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein are the ones with the biggest of chance of being even remotely close. Time: 15:00.

Fencing – Women’s Epee

Chinese world champion Li Na is the favorite to win the gold medal, while the defending Olympic champion, German Britta Heidemann, is still in the running for the medals but is unlikely to repeat her achievement from Beijing. Time: 19:40.

Gymnastics – Men’s artistic team all-around

Another event in which the Chinese are the favorites, being the Olympic champions, world champions and qualifying to the finals with the best score in the preliminary round, with Japan favorites for the silver and four more nations – South Korea, Russia, Germany and the United States in the hunt for bronze. Time: 16:30.

Judo – Women’s 57 KG and Men’s 73 KG

In the Women’s 57 kilograms, Brazilian silver medalist from the world championships, Rafaela Silva, is the slight favorite to come away with gold while the gold medalist from the 2008 Olympics, Italian Giulia Quintavalle, is also still in the running. For the men’s 73 kilograms competition, the obvious favorite is the world champion from Japan, Riki Nakaya. Time – 16:00.

Shooting

Men’s 10 meters air rifle competition at 12:15.

Swimming

Men’s 200 meters freestyle (19:41) – Ryan Lochte, the world champion and the qualifier with the fifth best time from the semifinals looked human in the 4×100 freestyle relay, which makes Sun Yang from China, coming down from the 1500 meters to dominate the 400 race on the first day, as the favorite to claim a second gold medal.

Women’s 100 meters backstroke (19:49) – A fight between Emily Seebohm of Australia with the best time in the semifinal and two gold medals (relay races) in her Olympic past from Beijing and London, while 17 year old Missy Franklin, who already has one bronze medal in London, will try and cause an upset like she surprised many in the world championships last year in the longer distance.

Men’s 100 meters backstroke (19:56) – Camille Lacourt of France shared the gold medal with Jeremy Stravius in the world championships last summer, but the fastest man in the heats was Matt Grevers of the United States, who came up with the silver medal in Beijing.

Women’s 100 meters breaststroke (20:13) – Rebecca Soni was supposed to the favorite heading into the final, being a double gold medal winner from the World Championships and the silver medalist from Beijing, but Lithuania’s Rūta Meilutytė, at 15, nearly broke the world record in the semifinal, becoming the top candidate for the gold medal.

Weightlifting – Men’s 62 kilograms (15:30) and Women’s 58 kilograms (19:00).
