Floyd Mayweather – Out of Jail, Now What?

The world of boxing just got a little bit more interesting again. The sport with Floyd Mayweather and without him isn’t the same, and after getting 30 days taken off his allotted time, not only has his bromance with 50 Cent ready to go back on track; It’s time for him to find a new boxer to fight.

The immediate name? Manny Pacquiao. But maybe there’s been a shift in the Welterweight division since Mayweather went into the county prison in Vegas? Pacquiao did lose to Timothy Bradley in a bad, bad split decision on June 9, and according to everyone involved, his booked November 10 fight doesn’t have Floyd Mayweather on the list. It’s either going to be a rematch with Timothy Bradley or the fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, who seems like he’s keeping his career alive just to get one last shot at beating Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather himself actually needs to get a new Nevada boxing license. He got a special one-time deal for the Miguel Cotto fight, also prolonging his time outside of prison for a bit longer. Yes, he means that much to the Las Vegas economy, and also helped make Mayweather the highest paid athlete in the world over the last 12 months, making around $85 million for his two fights with Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto.

In terms of boxing condition, Mayweather looks from the outside ready to go in the ring. Prison may be a lot of things, but it’s also an environment that usually helps guys get buffed up. There’s not much to do there, and Mayweather, isolated from the rest of the general population do to his high profile, probably spent most of his time working out, once he started eating the food.

After his fight with Miguel Cotto, it looked like Mayweather was once again considering retirement from the sport, for a second time. As confident as he always is, as focused as he always is on his goals, even Mayweather didn’t know what the experience was going to be like, and how he’ll come out of it. We still don’t know until we hear from the man himself, which probably won’t be too long from now.

So what are the options? The Manny Pacquiao deal is always something worthy fanticizing about, but as times goes by it just gets less and less interesting to people. Amir Khan talked about fighting Mayweather for more than a year, but has gone on to lose two fights since then. Sergio Martinez, who has a September fight against Julio Cesar Chavez, and Saul Alvarez, Canelo, with a big fight on the same day against Joselito Lopez, seem like the likeliest of opponents.

But before Mayweahter signs on to anything he needs to get his motor working, and his mouth as well. Expect some exclusive interview very soon, and a whole lot of trash talking and blaming to flying out of his mouth. To be fair, we kinda missed it.
