Top Five Point Guards in the NBA, Going into 2009-2010

As the NBA season draws nearer and nearer, we here at Sportige.com will post our Top 5’s for the upcoming season, beginning with the Point Guards today – Rose, Rondo, Billups, Parker and… guess…

Number 5 – Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls

Yes, he cheated on his SAT’s, and yes, he’s starting his second season in the NBA, but he’s that good, and he’s already one of the top 5 point guards in the league. Numbers? 16.8 points, 6.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 47.5% from the field, playing 37 minutes a night. He won Rookie of the year for the 2008-2009 season while leading all rookies in assists.

Rose immediately became the leader and the main player as a rookie for the Chicago Bulls, leading them into the playoffs and has a lot riding on his shoulders this season to get the Bulls even further into the post-season, with his Game 1 performance against the Boston Celtics (36 points, 11 assists) still in mind. Rose still needs to improve his outside shooting and it’ll be interesting how he faces the famous “second year slump”, but all in all, he’s turned himself very quickly into one of the best in the league in his position.

Number 4 – Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics

Rajon RondoImage: Source

Rondo kinda snuck up on people the last couple of seasons, but he really arrived last season, during the playoffs. The whole “big-three” hoopla took the spotlight away from the young man from Kentucky but he proved his worth during the 2007-2008 championship season. Last season? During the regular season he continued improving his numbers, especially his passing, dishing out 8.2 assists per game. Without Garnett in the lineup in the playoffs he emerged as a constant triple-double threat, posting 16.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.7 rebounds per game.

Rondo is an excellent defender and a very tough player, maybe a little too tough or dirty (last year’s Brad Miller incident) and a very good rebounder. Like Rose, he really needs to improve his outside shooting and free throw, but quietly he has matured into one of the top point guards in the league.

Number 3 – Chauncey Billups, Denver Nuggets

Chauncey BillupsImage: Source

“Mr. Big Shot”, maybe it’s a bit of an exaggeration about Billups, but not that much of an exaggeration. It took him some time, but Billups has become one of the premier point guards and players in general in the league, and his trade last season from the Detroit Pistons to the Denver Nuggets affected both teams immensely. Denver finished with their best record since their induction into the NBA while Detroit had their worst season since the 2000-2001 season.

Billups led the Nuggets, along with Carmelo Anthony, to the Western Conference Finals, Anthony’s first time past the first round in the playoffs. Billups averaged 17.9 points with 6.4 assists while shooting over 40% from three point. His numbers all improved during the Nuggets’ playoff run. Billups turned 33 about a week ago, but he isn’t showing signs of slowing down right now, and will be leading the Nuggets to another (hopeful) deep playoff run this season.

Number 2 – Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs

Tony ParkerImage: Source

Besides his rookie season in the league, when he was 19, Parker hasn’t scored less than 14.7 points per game and last year raised his gave to another level, averaging a career high in points per game (22.0) and assists (6.9). He has become the main offensive executor for the Spurs as everyone else (that means Duncan and Ginobili) are getting older, and yes, less and less effective.

Parker can burn any guy in the league and has also become a much more dependent clutch time performer, a factor of his game that was highly criticized during his first years in the league. Going into his ninth NBA season and maybe a last attempt to win the title with the Popovic-Duncan-Ginobili group, Tony Parker might be the best scoring point guard in the league and an almost certain 2 points when he slashes into the paint and his guy doesn’t get help (shoots over 50% from the field in three of the last four seasons).

Number 1 – Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets

Chris PaulImage: Source

Paul is the best point guard in the NBA for the past two seasons, maybe a bit more. There was a bit of contest from Deron Williams after the 2007-2008 season, but last year proved who is the best at the point. Paul can do it all – and he does it all – 22.8 points per game, 11 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game. If you’re looking for fantasy worth, he is the best GUARD, yes, better than Kobe and D-Wade for fantasy matters.

But we’re talking real matters, and Paul is an MVP caliber player, and don’t be so sure he won’t be with one when his basketball days are over. Although it doesn’t seem like he has enough talent around him to win a title just yet, things may change in the near future. The best point guard in the league deserves a crew to give him a title shot.

  1. where is deron williams?? how come there is no love for D-will? i’m skeptical towards rondo’s attitude and personality. d-will is way better than rondo. come on!

    • Hey, each person is entitled to his own opinion – Greg would rather have those five Point Guards, a lot of other people would prefer a different group.

  2. WOW,U PUT A DUMB SOPHOMORE AT #5 AND YOU DONT PUT A GUY NAMED DERON WILLAMS,WHO AVERAGES ALOT MORE POINTS,REBOUNDS,ASSITS,STEALS,AND BLOCKS THAN DERRICK ROSE!

  3. Funny you all put up BS base on no facts at all. Kidd and Nash are the two best in the NBA this year. So much you know. NASH KIDD DWILL CP3 in that order. CP3 would be the best if not for him being hurt. TP and HARRIS just suck… point blank. I like rondo but he has a lot to learn.

  4. hail noooooo first of all d rose is sick but not even in the top 5
    1 chancey billups
    2 deron williams
    3 chris paul
    4 rajon rondo
    5 toney parker

  5. This is fake rondo is not a top 5 point guard . i think top 5 is cp3 first deron williams second then the next three in any order gilbert arenas, chauncy billups and i guess nash

  6. cp3 is DEFINETLY #1 and always will be. rondo is so young and talented he deserves to be on the list. but wat the hell is up with tony parker and derrick rose up there??? no way maan. and dont even start on the topic of d-will. he is a chris paul wanna-be and deserves NOT to be on that list. D wade should be 2nd. Order:
    1. Chris Paul
    2.Dwayne Wade
    3.Rajon Rondo
    4.Chauncey Billups
    5. whoever else but NOT Deron Williams

  7. ha ha Dwayne Wade isn’t a point guard. And if Deron Williams is a Chris Paul wanna be how come he dominates CP3 whenever they go head to head?

  8. Man D-Will needs that number one slot, CP is good, but D-Will is slightly better. Jerry Sloan keeps people from noticing D-Will so much because he runs such an efficient offense. Parker and rose should be nowhere near this list. Rondon’t is vastly overrated too. Also Matt is dead on D-Will always owns CP 1 on 1, I’ve seen him break his ankles once.

PS. Fail at saying D. Wade is a PG.

  9. D-Will Dominates CP3. Chris Paul is a joke. D-will has been better since day one. He only gets the accolades cause he is forced to do everything for the pathetic hornets. Doesn’t anybody remember when the Jazz went to the wester conference finals a few years back and D-Will was averaging 30+ ppg in the PLAYOFFS. Now he is a more complete player and averages 10 + apg. D-will is the best in the NBA. He gets overlooked because he is unselfish and sticks to the offense. IMO that makes him far greater that any other.

  10. my list is:
    .CP3 or D/Will
    .D/Will or CP3
.Rondo, he is better than nash and kidd because those two old vet don’t play d at all, rondo would locked them up if they play each other
    .Steve Nash
    . Rose or Billups

  11. D- Williams #1 and Steve Nash #2 – how can you leave them off the list? Russell Westbrook is moving up the list quickly and ahead of tony parker and chauncy billups.

  12. This List = HUGE Fail. To not have D-Will in there is just ludicrous, especially when you’re putting Derrick Rose who hasn’t accomplished jack. Perhaps you don’t personally like D-will for whatever reason, but your omission just makes you look dumb.

  13. None of you guys top 5 makes sense and DWADE is not a fck*n Point Gaurd.

    Steve Nash
    Jason Kidd
    Deron Williams
    Chris Paul
    Chauncey Billups

  14. man u guys r silly wade is a 2 guard.

    *chris paul

    *deron williams

    *chauncey billups

    *steve nash

    *rajon rondo

  15. Deron williams is the best point in the league by far
chris paul would be second but gotta see what he plays like after being hurt.

then chauncy nash rose and parker any mix can work in there because nash has no D at all.

Rondo has no type of shot so you cant put him in there

Deron williams has better offensive game than any and can stick D

  16. Wow all these idiots who don’t know their basketball…

Saying Dwayne Wade is a point guard… Noobs.

Deron Williams is the BEST point guard in the game. After that, I’d say Rajon Rondo, Steve Nash, Chris Paul, and #5… probably Rose. Not really sure on that one.

But Williams should DEFINITELY be on any top 5 list of PG.

  17. 1.Deron Williams
    2.Rajon Rondo
3.Chris Paul (after injury upcoming this season)
    4.Steve Nash
    5.Chauncey Billups

Only retards can say Gilbert Arenas deserves to be on this list, he puts up more shot than the whole team all together
D-Wade clearly is not a PG…J-Kidd is old and really isn’t a good shooter and like rondo but he’s not 25 so he can’t dive and run like he lost his mind other than that he’s 6.

  18. 1. D-Will
    2. Cp3 (If he bounces back off that Injury)
    3. Nash
    4. Billups
    5. Rondo
    honorable mention..D-Rose and Russel Westbrook

  19. this is tottaly crazy this shuld not even be on the internet anywere extremely false Deron Williams is number 1
    Dwayne Wade is 2
    Chris Paul 3
    Rajon Rondo 4
    Derrick Rose5
Chauncy Billiups is a runner up

  20. I was a little lost with D. Will not being on the list as well……. D. WADE IS NOT A POINT GAURD!!!!!!! Christ, dude is a shooting gaurd.

  21. WHAT THE FFUCK?! where’s deron williams? you just lost all credibility to me. i won’t be visiting this sham of a website anymore. not even in the top 5? you gotta be shitting me…

    • Greg was on drugs last year… the 2010-2011 edition will definitely include D-Will, number one if it was up to me

  22. MATT: yes i was wrong bout d wade, but havent u noticed that d-will only beats cp3 1on1 for the past year? right after he got like 3 injuries in a row? d-will cant touch chris paul if hhe was in shape and cp3 is a waaay better team player and will benefit his team more

  23. Greg, by not putting Deron Williams in the top five, you have basically just told us all that you are mentally retarded. He should be number 1, number 2 at worst … but not in the top five. This is perhaps the most idiotic analysis of the 1 spot I’ve seen in my 30+ years of following basketball. I’m not a Jazz fan, by the way. But I’m also not brain dead, which you would have to be to think that D-Will is not in the top 2.

  24. you guys are all retarded. rajon rondo is easily the top point guard in the league. chauncey billups? no. where is steve nash?

  25. -Chris Paul
    -D-Will
    -Rajon Rondo
    -Nash
    -Rose
Chris paul and d-will are in a world of their own, but rajon is def. #3. he is the best defensive point guard in the nba. also, unarguably, his shot may need work, but what does that show about the rest of his game? He can score that much with no shot, so when his shot develops he will be beast.

  26. Steve Nash’s age 36 and defensive liability against quicker point guards excludes him from the top pg list. Rondo giving Derek Fisher the NBA title also is enough to exclude him from the list. Jerry Sloan is enough to disqualify D. Williams since he has tunnel vision and allows Phil Jackson to beat his teams and doesn’t know how to use Stockton and Malone or D. Willions + Snoozer to get a championship.

  27. D. Williams will get added to the list when he has some playoff success. Funny. D. Williams hasn’t had any playoff success. Snoozer went to Chicago and chose Rose over D. Williams which says a lot about who he thinks is better. Still. Carlos Snoozer is the guy that chose Utah over Lebron James which is really tasteless.

Snoozer chose Derrick Rose over D. Williams.

  28. Rajon Rondo has no business on the top pg list after what happened in the NBA finals against the Lakers. Rondo destroyed Cleveland and sent Lebron to Miami. In the NBA Championship he allows Derek Fisher a 35+ year old point guard to steal the championship. Rondo should be insulted.

  29. D. Williams will belong on the top 5 pg list when.
    A. Hell Freezes over.
    B. He goes to a real team not Utah (AKA NY, LA Lakers, Miami Heat).
    C. When Jerry “Sucks” Sloan gets fired and replaced by Pat Riley “Not Utah – Miami Baby”

  30. How difficult is it to build a championship team around Malone and Stockton? I mean 10 years with those guys and a shoulda beat Chicago and no Rings for Sloan? Sloan needs to be axed.

  31. D. Williams was only able to score 14 on Derek Fisher in the 2010 NBA playoffs. At least Rondo won 3 games verses the Lakers while D. Williams didn’t win any.

  32. Steve Nash played better against the 2010 playoff Lakers than Deron Williams. Steve Nash at least won 2 games while Deron Williams helped convince Boozer to go to Chicago.

  33. Are you crazy! Derrick Rose a better pg than D. Williams? Rose has a few years yet to catch to rose in terms of on court leadership and all-around game. Can’t agree with this list at all. 🙁

  34. The list above is full of bullshit..gotta be kidding to insist that rose and billups, etc are better than d.will?! WTF?? And somebody just mentioned d.will is comparably not good enough ’cause he lost all games vs lakers?? dude, it’s not all PG’s fault! how stupid

  35. Deron is the number one point gaurd and it doesn’t matter about which team wins because you can have the best player in the whole world and have the worst teammates ever for example when Al Jefferson was on theT-Wolves even though Big Al is a good player he didn’t win a lot but now that he is on the Jazz he is winning more!

  36. ok derrick rose is the best. in my opinion. He has improved immensely! Since his rookie year. He can really drive to the basket, but he doesnt get any calls!!! he gets fouled like every time he goes to the basket but the refs dont call it. cuz thats the only way anyone can stop his speed, is to foul him. hes amazing!

    • Hard to pick among 4 guys right now – D-Will, Paul, Rose and Rondo. My opinion on who’s the best among them changes every month.

  37. I would say tony parker because he is one of the best in the lead and they is the best this year if you wanna win get with us

  38. 10. Gilbert Arenas
    9. Jason Kidd
    8. Tony Parker
    7. Chauncey Billups
    6. Steve Nash
    5. Russel Westbrook
    4. Rajon Rondo
    3. Derrick Rose
    2. Deron Williams
    1. Chris Paul
