By rule, a muffed punt cannot be returned or retreated. It didn’t stop Kent State’s Andre Parker from picking it up and running 58 yards… in the wrong direction, although it eventually didn’t count in the official stat numbers, as the Golden Flashes beat the Towson Tigers 41-21.
The opening game for the MAC team against the FCS school went pretty well, but provided a moment that will probably become an internet sensation, with a late first half punt by Kent State towards Derrick Joseph of Towson started the hilarity.
Joseph let the ball graze his arm after a bounce, and Parker picked up on that mistake. He took the ball at the 7 yard line (Towson’s 7-yard line, that is) and continued to carry it for 58 yards. Even more crazy – two Towson players chased him down and forced him out of bounds to stop the play, before everyone explained to them how unnecessary the whole scene was.
