Transfer Rumors 2012 – Chelsea Still Chasing Andre Schurrle

Getting three bids rejected isn’t enough, as Chelsea are still trying to land Andre Schurrle from Leverkusen despite seeing offers for the German winger getting refused time and time again this summer, but the looming transfer deadline is giving the European Champions an incentive to try again.

Offers for £15 million, £17 million and £20 million have already been sent and turned down by the club who have always answered with the same kind of reply – We don’t want to sell Schurrle because we can’t get a player of his caliber, no matter the price we sell him in. That might mean that Bayer actually want to hang on to the 21 year old, but it also can mean – Give us a better offer, which is usually the case.

Chelsea will now offer something in the region of £22-23 million and see if Leverkusen bite, although a club that hopes to make it to the Champions League is unlikely to sell their biggest star on the final day of the transfer deadline, knowing they’re not going to get anyone as good or even close to as good in time, unless they have someone younger waiting to take his place. As far as we know, Leverkusen don’t have that kind of depth and talent pool.

Despite the 3-from-3 start for Chelsea, Di Matteo wants more top quality in his squad while trying to get of the old and ‘useless.’ Daniel Sturridge, despite being one of Chelsea’s best players last season, isn’t really someone Di Matteo is counting on to contribute this season. English players don’t get tons of credit from Italian coaches, and he might be on his way out (Liverpool?), while Yossi Benayoun, Michael Essien and even Florent Malouda are looking for a last minute permanent or loan deal that will promise them some playing time this season, something not likely to happen at Chelsea.

While trying to offload excess baggage is fine, Chelsea won’t release all of them unless they’re able to sign Schurrle, knowing that a deep squad is essential for this year’s success, as it is in any season. Schurrle has played only one season so far for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 7 goals in 31 matches for the club last year. He’s also been capped 17 times for the German national team, scoring 7 goals thus far, also playing for the side in Euro 2012.
