The NBA’s First Week in Review

A week into the 2009-2010 season, what do we have? Five undefeated teams – Boston, Miami, Orlando, Denver and Phoenix. Miami and Phoenix are the big surprise here, but still, it’s been just one week, the losses are a’comin. There are also three win-less teams – Nets, Pacers and the Warriors.Yes, the Warriors. Despite Action Jackson announcing he’s better than Kobe in the pre-season, it doesn’t look like he’ll be leading them to a very impressive record this year.

The Celtics are enjoying the fact that all the main guys are healthy. Paul Pierce is the obvious go to guy in the beginning of this season, 14th in the league so far in the efficiency rating, scoring 21.8 points while bringing down 6.5 boards per game.

Orlando, despite losing Vince Carter to an injury (surprised anyone?), are looking good, and besides Howard (3rd in efficiency with 21.7 points, 16 rebounds and 2.3 blocks) are getting some nice numbers from Ryan Anderson (17.3 points) and J.J. Redick (16.3).

Jermaine O'NealImage: Source

Miami are having a nice start, with Wade obviously leading the team in scoring (27.7 points) but the real bonus to this season’s start seems to be Jermaine O’Neal finding his groove again, opening the season with 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

In the West, Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets have opened with three wins, with Anthony leading the NBA in efficiency, scoring 37.7 points per game, including back to back 40+ games against Portland and Memphis. Is this a year he’ll finally become and MVP-candidate caliber player? Billups is also enjoying a good start, scoring 23 points per game.

Steve NashImage: Source

The Suns have also started 3-0, and despite Nash and Grant Hill combining for more than 70 years on planet earth, they’re running and gunning like it’s 2005. Both are in the top 20 in efficiency, with Nash scoring 18.7 points and dishing out 14 assists (including 20 assists against the Warriors on Friday) and Grant Hill (37 years old mind you) is scoring 20 while pulling down almost 10 boards per game. Thing is, they’ve played the Clippers, ‘Wolves and Warriors. A five game Eastern road trip starting tonight will probably produce some losses.

Performance of The Week – Kevin Martin

Martin helped the Kings grab their first W of the 2009-2010 season, scoring 48 points in their 127-116 overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Martin also had five boards, four assists and four steals.

Week 1 Starting Five –

Guards – Kobe Bryant (6th in efficiency – 31.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3 steals) and Louis Willimas (also 6th – 20 points with 5.3 rebounds and 5 assists per game).

Forwards – Carmelo Anthony (1st in efficiency – 37.7 points, 7 rebounds and 4.3 assists) and Chris Bosh (2nd in efficiency – 31 points and 14.7 rebounds).

Center – Dwight Howard (3rd in efficiency – 21.7 points, 16 rebounds, 2.3 blocks).

Rookie of the Week – Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee Bucks

He has played only two games, but the kid who preferred playing in Europe than “wasting” time & money in college has been the Bucks best player so far, scoring 20.5 points with 5.5 rebounds and six assists. He almost got a triple double in the loss to Philly, with a 17-9-9 stat line. Dejuan Blair of the Spurs is also worth mentioning, so far proving to be worth much more than his second round pick with 8.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in 20 minutes of action.
