Liverpool were almost there, but as usual, when Fernando Torres comes out when the game still on the line, good things do not follow for Benitez. Ryan Babel put Liverpool in front with a fantastic goal in the 83rd minute, momentarily saving Liverpool’s European and maybe whole season, but a weird mix up in the reds defence helped Lisandro Lopez get Lyon the goal and point they needed to secure their place in the next stage.

In the group’s second game, Fiorentina did a demolition job on Debrecen, beating the Hungarian side 5-2. Lyon lead the group with 10 points, Fiorentina are second with 9, Liverpool third with 4 points (need to beat Fiorentina by more than 2 goals next match and that Fiorentina don’t win against Lyon on the final day of group play). Debrecen are last with no points.
