Does Andy Murray have anything to be proud of? Sure, he has a Grand Slam title and an Olympic gold medal. But when he’s compared with Novak Djokovic, who has won five in a career that began at the same time, it doesn’t look as impressive. And when you throw Rafael Nadal into the discussion, with 11, it doesn’t look fair. All that dwarfs in comparison to Roger Federer, with 17.

Despite Federer and Nadal sharing 28 Grand Slam titles between them, the direction of the tennis world is quite clear. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray battling it out for supremacy, as Murray seems to have finally figured out how to step up on the biggest of stages. He may have had a little help from the Djokovic injury in the US Open final, but a slam final win over a number one (not at the time) player is what it is.

And what about Federer? His time of reign over the tennis world is over, or nearly is. There are some weeks during the year and season where he feels rested, healthy and fresh enough to play the kind of tennis no one can match up against, but these stretches are getting rarer and rarer, as Federer himself will play less and less, trying to conserve energy for the important tournaments. Nadal? No expectations. We just want to see him back on the tennis courts. One step at a time, and getting right back on the horse and winning Grand Slam titles just doesn’t seem to be in the cards right away.
