College Football – Only Six Undefeated Teams Left

College Football – Only Six Undefeated Teams Left

Things are getting a whole of a lot simpler in the BCS picture of the 2012 College Football season, with only six teams left holding an undefeated record: The National champions, Alabama Crimson Tide, in the SEC; Kansas State Wildcats in the Big 12; Louisville Cardinals in the Big East; Oregon Ducks in the Pac-12; and Notre Dame.

How about Ohio State? They’re 9-0, but it doesn’t really matter when they’re not bowl eligible. Oregon State, Florida, Mississppi State, Rutgers and Ohio, who weren’t really in the National title picture anyway, all went down on week 8 that was a real eliminator when it came to contenders and pretenders.

The question is, how do the board, polls and computers re-shuffle everything?

We know who the polls love. Alabama, Alabama, Alabama. The Mississippi State game was their first real test of the season, facing the #11, undefeated Bulldogs. Well, it was just the same as with every other game they’ve had this year. Too much speed, too much power, too much depth at pretty much every position. It ended 38-7, and it’s only because the Tide kinda allowed that touchdown to happen in the fourth.

Who follows? Well, reason says Kansas State should be the next in line to take over the number 2 spot. Without a Big 12 championship game to go through, it looks like their undefeated season is at the least risk out of everyone in the running. They did struggle early against Texas Tech, but Collin Klein is simply too much to handle for anyone in the nation, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns while running for 83 more and two more scores. It ended in another blowout (55-24) win for the Wildcats, who are in the top 13 in the nation in both scoring and points against.

The Oregon Ducks did what they’ve been doing all season. Destroying teams beyond recognition in the first half (56-0) and then keeping it loose and letting their opponents get some points. De’Anthony Thomas proved once again why he’s the most electrifying player in the nation, as the Ducks scores style points that won’t help them until they beat USC with a 70-14 win. USC did lose to Arizona, so beating them becomes less points worthy, but Oregon did destroy Arizona as well.

Are Notre Dame the most impressive team of them all? Not a lot of people, for some reason, gave them a chance going into Norman. Forget about history and Stoops’ 79-5 record at home, or the Fighting Irish record against Oklahoma. The past is the past; but the Sooners struggled and lost at home against a great Kansas State defense. Who thought it was going to be any different against the best defense in the nation?

Louisville? No one is thinking about them. They barely made it through their second toughest game of the season, beating Cincinnati 34-31 in overtime, but they’re going to need a lot to happen to move quickly up the rankings. Like everybody losing, while they manage to go through their season-ending game against Rutgers unscathed. Even if they’ll be the only undefeated team left, it’s hard seeing them getting the nod for #1 or #2 from the BCS – human or computer.
