Of the final 16 teams that made it out of the group stage in the 2012-2013 Champions League and into the knockout round, we have 4 teams from Spain (Barcelona, Malaga, Real Madrid, Valencia), 3 from Germany (Bayern, Dortmund, Schalke), 2 from England (Arsenal, Manchester United), 2 from Italy (Juventus, Milan) and 1 from France (PSG), Portugal (Porto), Ukraine (Shakhtar), Scotland (Celtic) and Turkey (Galatasaray).
Arsenal FC
Not the greatest season for Arsenal up to this point; The 2006 finalists came out of second place in a group that included Schalke, Olympiakos and Montpellier, finishing with 10 points. Lukas Podolski was their top scorer with 3 goals. They’re currently 10th in the Premier League.
FC Barcelona
Four time European champions, Barcelona finished first in the group that included Benfica, Celtic and Spartak Moscow, finishing with 13 points. Lionel Messi, with 5 goals, led their scoring. They’re currently safely leading the Spanish La Liga.
Bayern Munich
Bayern, who have lost in the UCL final twice over the past three years, finished on top of their group which included Valencia, Lille and BATE Borisov. Thomas Muller and Claudio Pizzaro scored three goals each to lead the team in the group stage. They’re currently leading the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund, Champions League winners in 1997, finished on top of the “group of death”, not losing a single match, ahead of Real Madrid, Ajax and Manchester City. Robert Lewandowski led the scoring with 4 goals. They are currently third in the Bundseliga.
Celtic
Celtic finished second, with 10 points, in a group that included Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak. They haven’t been to the knockout stage since 2008. Georgios Samaras led the team’s scoring with 3 goals. They are in the lead at the moment of the SPL.
Galatasaray
The Turkish champions finished second in a group that included Manchester United, Cluj and Braga, claiming 10 points. Burak Yilmaz scored six of their seven goals. They are currently leading the table in Turkey. They haven’t been past the group stage since 2002 and haven’t reached the knockout stage since 2001 in the Champions League.
Juventus
The Italian champions haven’t been to the knockout stage since 2009. Juventus finished on top of their group, ahead of Shakhtar, Chelsea and Nordsjælland. Fabio Quagliarella and Arturo Vidal led the scoring with three goals each. They are currently leading the table in Italy.
Malaga
A team that makes it into the knockout stage on their first ever season in the Champions League. Malaga finished on top of their group with 12 points, ahead of Zenit, Anderlecht and AC Milan. Eliseu was their top scorer with 3 goals. They are fifth at the moment in Spain.
Manchester United
United last won the competition in 2008, since then reaching the final two more times. They finished on top of their group, which included Galatasaray, Cluj and Braga, with 12 points. Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez led the scoring with 3 goals. They are currently leading the Premier League.
AC Milan
Milan, who last won the competition in 2007, finished second in their group, behind Malaga and ahead of Zenit and Anderlecht, with only 8 points. Stephan El Shaarawy and Alexandre Pato led the scoring with two goals each. They are currently 7th in the Serie A.
PSG
Paris Saint-Germain finished with more points than anyone else during the group stage: 15 points in a group that included Porto, Dynamo Kyiv and Dinamo Zagreb. Ezequiel Lavezzi finished as their top scorer with 3 goals. They’re only 4th at the moment in France.
Porto
Finished second in a group that included PSG, Dinamo Zagreb and Dynamo Kyiv. Jackson Martinez, with three goals, was their top scorer. Porto are currently leading the league in Portugal.
Real Madrid
Finished second in their group, with 11 points, behind Dortmund and ahead of Ajax and Manchester City. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 6 goals to lead the way, tied for the best in the competition so far. They are third in the Spanish La Liga at this point.
Schalke 04
Schalke finished on top of a group that included Arsenal, Olympiacos and Montpellier. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was their top scorer with 4 goals. They are currently 4th in the German Bundesliga.
Shakhtar Donetsk
Finished second behind Juventus and ahead of Chelsea and Nordsjælland. Willian was their top scorer with 4 goals. Shakhtar are currently leading the league in the Ukraine.
Valencia
Two time finalists over a decade ago, Valencia finished second in their group with 13 points. Bayern Munich finished on top, Lille and BATE finished below them. Both Jonas and Roberto Soldado scored four goals. They are having a tough time at home, currently residing in 12th place and have already fired one manager this season.
