It’s been about keeping the cards close to the chest as Floyd Mayweather prepares for his first fight since being released from prison, but according to recent rumors and updates, his next opponent will be IBF Welterweight champion Devon Alexander.

If this is true, and the whole rumors regarding Robert Guerrero and Timothy Bradley turn out to be false, it means that Alexander might not have been that hurt when he pulled out of his February 23 fight against Kell Brook which was supposed to take place in Los Angeles.

According to Mayweather’s Facebook page, The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight.

So is Alexander a worthy opponent? Few things so. The 25 year old, with a 24-1 record has fought only twice in the Welterweight division, beating Marcos Maidana as he made his debut in the division before beating Randall Bailey to win the IBF Welterweight title back in October. Bailey, still one of the hardest hitters around, couldn’t really get any shots on the younger, quicker Alexander, who kept Bailey guessing and missing before winning by a unanimous decision.

This puts an end to the rumors regarding an early fight with Canelo, leaving Saul Alvarez and a Light Middleweight fight as an opening for September. Mayweather hasn’t fought since May 5, 2012, beating Miguel Cotto by a unanimous decision before going to prison in a delayed sentence.

While spending his time, many things in the boxing world have changed, especially when it comes to the man everyone wanted him to fight – Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao lost to Timothy Bradley in a laugher of a decision, later getting knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez, a fight that ended all speculation regarding Mayweather and the Filipino boxer ever meeting in the ring for a Mega PPV fight. Pacquiao himself isn’t planning to fight in the United States any time soon, while Marquez has been facing allegation of using PEDs in recent weeks in order to bulk up for the Pacquiao fight.

Meanwhile, Mayweather has been watching from the side, waiting for the right opportunity to arrive. First he let it be known that he’ll be fighting twice in 2013, once in May and once in September during the Mexican holidays; Mayweather hasn’t fought twice in one year since 2007, so it remains to be seen after his May fight, presumably against Alexander, if he’s up for another one so soon.

As for the match up, few believe that Alexander might be a good one. Not really known for one to be pressing the action, Alexander seems like another one of those fights that will be very comfortable for Mayweather when it comes to pace and picking his own shots. Alexander is known for simply surviving fights, dropping his only professional bout to Timothy Bradley in 2011 after an unintentional head-butt forced a stop to the bout.
