After missing half the season due to injury, not to mention Charles Woodson is turning 37 next season, it’s becoming a very hard decision for the Green Bay Packers – keep him on for another expensive year or let him go.

Here are the facts – Keeping Woodson for an entire 2013 season will cost them $10 million; base salary is $6.5 million, roster bonus of $2.5 million comes the first day of training camp, $1 million bonus through the 16-week season – $65,000 for each game he plays – with more potential money based on incentives. That means nearly $9.4 million against the cap for 2013 if Woodson plays in all 16 games, and more than $10 million with the incentives.

Woodson, an 8-time Pro Bowler and 7-time All-Pro played in 7 regular season games at the Safety position after the injury to Nick Collins. Woodson himself broke his collarbone during the Packers’ victory over the St. Louis Rams on October 21. He came back for the two playoff games against the Vikings and the 49ers.

Woodson recorded only one interception last season, his lowest production since before becoming a Packer in 2006, mostly due to the change in position, but there’s no doubt that part of the problems the Packers had in their secondary this year were about Woodson simply not being as good as he was in the past, like the entire Green Bay Packers defense.

Another problem for the Packers, like it is for many others team, is trying to decide who to keep on a team that has won 47 games over the past four seasons, making the playoffs four times and winning the Super Bowl after the 2010 season. With Aaron Rodgers, B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews also up for extensions on their contracts, the Packers have a chance of pushing their final decision on Woodson’s contract until training camp begin in July, but there’s a good chance they’ll make a call on Woodson’s future with the team prior to March 12, when the 2013 NFL calendar begins.
