Looking for a pass rusher in this free agency class isn’t going to bring the Seattle Seahawks and out-of-this-world kind of talent, but thereĀ quiteĀ a few productive players out there who might be looking for a new team, like Dwight Freeney, who is probably not going to be with the IndianapolisĀ ColtsĀ once it’s over.
There are more than a couple of things that make Freeney, a 7 time Pro-Bowler and 4-time All-Pro, quite an interesting and potentially good fit with the Seahawks. Despite recording only 5 sacks in 2012, Freeney never really fit in with the 3-4 defense Chuck Pagano brought with him from Baltimore; he is getting older (32), but he still has plenty of ability left to rush the passer. He just needs the right system.
The Seahawks play in the 4-3, and withĀ Chris Clemons recovering from a torn ACL, their eyes towards another pass rusher in the defensive line takes them to free agency. Don’t forget they have a talentedĀ Bruce Irvin heading into his second season out of the NFL Draft, but the Seahawks would like to add anotherĀ capableĀ pass-rusher to the mix.
At first some hinted at Paul Kruger being their premier choice, but the combination of Kruger coming off a contract year, playing with someone who draws more attention than him (Terrell Suggs) and probably looking for a big , $35-40 million deal has hurt the Seahawks’ desire to land theĀ BaltimoreĀ Ravens linebacker. Freeney, after 11 years in the NFL with the Colts, recording 107.5 sacks in 163 games, fifth among active players, isn’t going to be this demanding.
Freeney will probably be looking for a team that’s thinking about the playoffs, and not in some rebuilding mode. At his age, with their kind of depth, adding Freeney might be another great piece in an already very good defense, as the Seahawks aim to take over the NFC West next season after finishing half a game behind the 49ers in 2012, just barely missing out on a game against them in the NFC title decided. After going to two Super Bowls with the Colts, Freeney is probably looking for a few final chances at some glory before it’s all over for him, also hoping that playing in a defense more suitable for his talents puts him back on the right kind of track when it comes to production on the field.
