NFL Rumors – Indianapolis Colts to Chase Plenty of Free Agents

It’s hard to say exactly how much cap space the Indianapolis Colts are going to have once they re-sign their own players, but it’s safe to assume they’ll be lined up to making multiple big moves in free agency, with players like Paul Kruger, Jake Long, Sebastian Vollmer, Ed Reed and Mike Wallace on their sights.

The Colts have around $45 million in cap space to work with, which means GM Ryan Grigson can look at a lot of players and offer several big deals in hoping to once again take over the AFC South and put the Colts one step further, at least, than they were last season, hoping Andrew Luck continues to develop.

First, there’s taking care of your own, and the Colts don’t have big names to re-sign, which means not a lot of money being spent on retaining players. Donnie Avery had a very good year last season, catching 60 passes for 781 yards and three touchdowns. Cornerback Jerraud Powers isn’t projected to be a starter, but he did a very good job as a hole-plugger in the secondary, something the Colts would like to see him do more of. Pat McAfee, the punter, is probably going to remain with team.

And now for the upgrades. Dwight Freeney being let go means the Colts are moving completely to a 3-4 defense, and the name of Paul Kruger has come up more than once. The Ravens’ linebacker recorded 4.5 sacks during the postseason, including the Super Bowl, and while not all teams are too sure about giving him a big contract like he wants ($35-40 million in total), the Colts certainly have the personnel who know him, and the money to make it work.

It seems like the offensive line is another issue the Colts would seriously like to address, but they will need to wait for the franchise tag decision to be made. A lot of team are hoping Sebastian Vollmer of the New England Patriots becomes available, and the Colts have more money and cap room than others to lure him away from the Northeast. Branden Albert of the Kansas City Chiefs is also an option the Colts are pondering, and so are the two Bills’ safeties, George Wilson and Jairus Byrd, although at the moment, it seems more likely that the Bills will re-sign them both, or franchise one of them.
