Is the financial lure of playing for Paris Saint-Germain so great that they might be able to get the biggest English star of the Premier League, Wayne Rooney, from Manchester United, for the right kind of offer? They certainly think so.
According to the London Times, PSG are going to launch a £40 million bid for Rooney in the summer, hoping the add another piece to their all-star squad slowly being shaped into one of the more formidable in Europe. It’s not about filling the positions of need, because money, at the moment, doesn’t seem to something that can hold PSG back from buying stars AND players they need to fill certain positions.
Is Rooney even for sale? In this season alone there seems to be ups and downs in his relationship with Alex Ferguson, not to mention his fitness and level of play. Not just the penalties that are missed, but also sometimes looking out of position in certain matches, forced to move elsewhere due to Robin van Persie’s dominance. He has scored 10 league goals in 19 matches this season, but has often shown his best football when playing in a more retreated role, sometimes even in the center of midfield.
Alex Ferguson? While he’s certainly appreciative of what a useful player he has in Rooney, cashing in on someone in their prime for money from a club that’s probably flexible on the price they’re going to pay (maybe even £50 million?!) isn’t strange to him, especially if Rooney says he wants to try and play somewhere else, especially for more money. The Glazers surely wouldn’t mind getting in quite a lot of cash for a player they paid £25.6 million for in 2004.
Rooney has been with United since the 2004-2005 season, winning four Premier League titles (on his way to his fifth) and the Champions League in 2008. He has played in 270 Premier League matches for the club, scoring 139 goals.
