NFL Rumors – Houston Texans Interested in Julian Edelman

When you look only at the numbers, there might be better receivers out there than Julian Edelman, who hasn’t played much for the New England Patriots since entering the NFL four seasons ago. But the Houston Texans don’t need a stud, they already have Andre Johnson. They just need someone to take the pressure off.

And while Edelman was hurt last season with a broken foot, he just might be one of the better slot receivers in the NFL, and might be an answer to the Texans’ problems in the passing game, which was simply ineffective many times without having a deep threat, while defenses found it easy to simply roll their coverage on to Andre Johnson.

Edelman was actually a quarterback coming out of college, but has developed (not done yet) as a wide receiver who provides a very good option for both the short and deep game, usually halted by injuries and simply not being regarded highly enough on the New England Patriots’ depth chart. The Texans, who only have DeVier Posey and Kevin Walter as their other receiving options, know there are several ares they need upgrading in if they’re going to be more than just an impressive regular season team.

Providing Matt Schaub with more options to throw to, and maybe helping Gary Kubiak become a little less conservative with the playcalling due to possible a lack of belief in anyone but Johnson on the receiving crew, just might be the most important thing the Texas have to address this off-season, while hoping that their linebacker situation will take care of itself, which means having a healthy Brian Cushing.

Edelman isn’t the only wide receiver the Texans are looking into, also mentioned with quite a few names in the mock drafts surfacing everywhere, but Edelman is only 26 and should come relatively cheaply, providing an option really worth looking into.
