It seems like we’re going to be hearing quite a lot about the offers the New York Jets are going to entertain for Darrelle Revis, and while the San Francisco 49ers (because of their draft picks) are considered the number one potential location, going to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might be just as good of an option.

Unlike the 49ers, the Bucs are desperate for both a premier player, which Revis will hopefully be after he completes his return from a torn ACL, and a good cornerback, badly. They were ranked 29th in the NFL in total defense despite having an excellent run D, and were dead last, yes, even worst than the New Orleans Saints, in defending against the pass.

Do they have the draft picks and the cap space? Yes. The Bucs are $32 million under the cap, and although they have other players they’ll be gunning for in an attempt to give Josh Freeman another offensive weapon, fixing that secondary might be an even bigger issue. They have an extra fourth round pick, and sending that one along with a first round pick (they’re not going to get a better corner than Revis at 13) might be enough to get him away from the Jets.

As for the Cap Space, that allows them to give Revis an immediate extension he’s looking for, making him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL – they have plenty of cap space for quite a few years, and can work around specific season, as long as Revis gets paid like the thinks he deserves to be.

Revis is also a big name, and the Bucs seems to be in shortage of those. The Florida sports market is a hard one to get excited – too many options, and too many people not from around, but bringing in a big name like Revis immediately turns the Bucs defense from a bad one in to a good one, not to mention other signings they should be making. The offense seems to be in a good place with Freeman, Martin and Vincent Jackson. Bringing in a big name and great player like Revis might improve their marketability, as well as put them in the playoff hunt once again.
