NFL Rumors – Seattle Seahawks Still Looking to Trade Matt Flynn

NFL Rumors – Seattle Seahawks Still Looking to Trade Matt Flynn

One of the first names to be on everyone’s lips earlier this off-season was that of Matt Flynn, who seemed certain to be traded by the Seattle Seahawks due to his desire to start, and the pretty big payday he’ll receive if the Seahawks don’t find a team to take it on.

And while the numbers and dollars suggest that keeping Flynn isn’t really economic, not when there’s a good chance he won’t start a single game once again after losing the starting job that should have been his before training camp last season to Russell Wilson, the Seahawks aren’t in that much of a hurry to get rid of him.

After the moves of different teams to sure-up their quarterback situation, there are fewer who still look to make a move in that area: The Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, all with a different degree of urgency at the position, and all probably thinking about the draft as well instead of giving up some draft picks for Flynn who has an impressive reputation, but only one impressive start to really show on his resume.

At the moment, Flynn’s contract counts against $7.25 million of the Seahawks’ cap space. By releasing him, still an option, however unlikely, would give Seattle a couple of options on how to take the cap penalty – count $6 million against the cap this year, or $2 million for this year and $4 million for the next, but the 2013 savings would not be realized right away. Only if trading him, the Seahawks can save just over $4 million in cap space for the 2013 season.

Still, there aren’t that many needs for Seattle at the moment, and clearing cap-space as well isn’t one of them. Unless one of the needier teams in terms of their quarterback situation makes them an offer they can’t refuse, they’ll prefer to hang on to Flynn as insurance just in case Wilson gets injured on the Seahawks’ attempt to reach the Super Bowl next season.
