NFL Rumors – New England Patriots Interested in Adrian Wilson

While their earlier big moves in free agency were about their wide receiver situation, the New England Patriots might finally start to address a more burning need – their secondary, as they attempt to sign Adrian Wilson of the Arizona Cardinals.

Wilson, a five-time Pro Bowler and one time All-Pro is no longer one of the best strong safeties in the NFL, limited in his playing time by the Cardinals last season, at this point in his career being a bit more than aĀ in-the-box safety, which is reasonable after 12 seasons in the league, including making the Super Bowl after the 2008 season, not being too far from actually winning it against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Patriots had a bad situation to begin with in their secondary, but also lostĀ Patrick Chung, who signed with Philadelphia, and are about to loseĀ strong safety Derrick Martin, who isn’t likely to re-sign with the team. Wilson can still bring enough in run support and obviously his leadership, being the next-in-line of a long list of veterans Bill Belichick loves to sign, squeezing the last drops of juice they still have before they’re cast away into retirement.

In 181 games, Wilson has 25.5 sacks and 27 interceptions, scoring four defensive touchdowns during his career. The Patriots, who lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game, were ranked 29th last season in pass-defense.
